Late Runs Sink Rumble Ponies In Extras

The Rumble Ponies fell 7-3 to the Sea Dogs in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Mirabito Stadium, undone by a four-run top of the 10th. Binghamton struck out 13 times at the plate, stranded eight runners, and saw a late lead slip away.

Jonathan Santucci handled the bulk of the starting work, going 4 2/3 innings on 84 pitches. He gave up four hits and two earned runs, walked two, and struck out seven, the most by any pitcher in the game on either side. Max Green followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, fanning three without issuing a walk.

Binghamton turned things around in the bottom of the third. With one out, JT Schwartz launched his third home run of the season to tie the game at one. Two batters later, Marco Vargas drew a walk and came around to score on a Chris Suero double to left, giving Binghamton a 2-1 lead. The lead lasted only into the fifth, when Portland evened it before a Jacob Reimer sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning put the Rumble Ponies back ahead 3-2.

Portland pushed across the tying run in the eighth, then broke through against Jefry Yan in extras. With the zombie runner aboard, the Sea Dogs strung together a triple, a double, a single, and another double to plate four. Yan was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, in his one inning of work.

Schwartz finished 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two runs scored. Wyatt Young added two hits and two stolen bases.

Cyclones Combine For Shutout Over Wilmington

Brooklyn blanked the Blue Rocks 6-0 at Maimonides Park behind a five-pitcher combined shutout, scattering four hits over nine innings while striking out 10 and walking just one.

Daviel Hurtado set the tone, working four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks while allowing only two hits. Joe Jacques picked up the win with a strikeout in a clean fifth, Ryan Dollar followed with a hitless sixth, and Garrett Stratton fired two shutout frames in the seventh and eighth, striking out three. Cristofer Gomez closed it out with a one-hit, two-strikeout ninth.

The Cyclones broke through in the second. Colin Houck and Trace Willhoite drew back-to-back walks before Sam Biller punched a single up the middle, scoring Houck for a 1-0 lead. Brooklyn doubled the margin in the third when Mitch Voit worked a walk and John Bay followed by lining his sixth home run of the season to left field, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Biller stayed busy in the fourth, lacing a double to right that scored Trace Willhoite from first and making it 4-0. Yonatan Henriquez added a run-scoring single in the seventh, and Voit capped the scoring in the eighth with a base hit to left that brought home Nick Roselli.

Biller finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a walk, while Voit reached safely three times with two walks, a single, and a run scored. Bay's homer and two-RBI night anchored the middle of the order. Ronald Hernandez chipped in with a triple in the third.

Three Homers Lift St. Lucie To Win Over Bradenton

The St. Lucie Mets bashed three home runs and rolled to an 8-2 win over the Marauders at LECOM Park, racking up 10 hits and 10 walks while their pitching staff held Bradenton to two unearned runs over nine innings.

Jonathan Jimenez opened on the mound and gave the Mets 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run while walking and striking out none. Christian Rodriguez followed and picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings, surrendering two hits and one unearned run while fanning two. Miguel Mejias was the standout out of the bullpen, striking out six over two perfect innings.

St. Lucie struck quickly in the second. Julio Zayas led off the inning with his third home run of the year, and Chase Meggers later doubled to center to bring home AJ Salgado for a 2-0 lead. The Mets tacked on in the third when Antonio Jimenez walked, moved to third on a Randy Guzman double, and scored on a Zayas groundout.

The fifth was the back-breaker. With Zayas aboard on a walk, Salgado launched his eighth home run of the year to make it 5-1. Simon Juan followed in the sixth with a two-run shot to left that brought Antonio Jimenez home, and Elian Peña tacked on an RBI single in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Peña reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Antonio Jimenez was on base in all five trips with a single, three walks, a hit-by-pitch, two stolen bases, and two runs scored.
