Dunkirk (2017)

The story of the evacuation of Allied troops from France to England during World War II. The British Navy was keeping its warships close to home to in order to repel the expected German invasion. So private boats, manned by civilians, went to the French coast to retrieve the troops.
The movie centers on three intertwined stories; a soldier trying to get back to England, an Englishman and his sons sailing his private boat to rescue soldiers, and a fighter pilot trying to protect the troops and ships from enemy planes.

Fairly quiet as war films go as, rather than being the typical big war picture epic, it was really just a very small slice of a small part of the war.
But it was well done.

Saw this in Amsterdam on maybe the biggest screen I've ever encountered. Good aerial photography (probably CGI) and some good performances but clumsily written. No Saving Private Ryan. Three stars.

Man, that multiple points-of-view and multiple points-of-time made it purty hard to anchor yourself into this. Did Kurt Vonnegut write it?

It's a gorgeously shot movie, weaving together three stories and time-lines, then merging them at Dunkirk. It's light on character but strong on imagery; it's minimal dialogue makes it a quiet movie that explodes with a moments of intense violence and anxiety... as war itself has often been described.

I liked it alot.
