ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I'd gamble on Bartolo before Pill. Gsellman etc.

RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Colon certainly could replace a lot of the dismal callups the team has used when trying to find starting pitchers. They only have to pay him the league minimum, too.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Oh yeah, I'm on board with Big Sexy. Entertainment value if nothing else. More confidence in him than Rafael Montero.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 I have no objection to this, but very little enthusiasm either.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Yeah, there's little reason to have a lot of enthusiasm on this. He should be looked at as a possible addition to what we have currently, not as a savior or as a replacement for anyone. As much as we may have liked him over the last couple of years, an 8.10 ERA across 13 starts is not something to be dismissed. Yeah, the hitter-friendly ballpark in Cobb County probably had something to do with it, but that still translates to a 6.10, or maybe 7.10 somewhere else.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Yeah, I'm happy to donate enthusiasm any may lack. The Braves new ballpark and the 2017 baseball are a conspiracy to undermine exactly the sort of starting pitcher Colón is. But stealing back-end innings from Neil Ramirez for something like a major league minimum and a high Bartolo factor? I'm signing up and dotting the i's with balloon-y hearts.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Why would the new ballpark make Bartolo unable to throw strikes?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 It doesn't. Not directly, anyhow. What it does, along with the 2017 version of the ball, is make it harder to keep the ball in the ball in the park, forcing Bartolo Colón, and everybody else, to try to be cuter, and therefore throwing fewer strikes.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Bartolo's home ERA this year, in Atlanta: 8.25. His road ERA: 8.05.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 A fifth of a run difference. It's good to have that sort of validation in the data.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Howie was saying last night that Bartolo had confided to some former teammates that he was unhappy with his situation in Atlanta. I mean I'm sure he meant to do his best but the suggestion was maybe his mighty heart wasn't in it and that a change of scenery would be good for him.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 I'd be unhappy too if my "situation" involved getting blown out 9 times in 13 outings. He signed there because they'd promise him starts for his attempt at the all-time Dominican wins record while he knew he'd be no better than 7th on the starter depth chart had he stayed here.Of course no one knew at the time that our starter depth chart, like Nigel's amp, would go to eleven, buuuuuuut shit happens.btw, his final four starts for Atlanta: 30 runs (23 Earned) on 32 hits, 9 walks & 9 Ks in a total of 15 innings
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Remember that every year with the Mets he went through an extended stretch of farce where he absolutely did not look like a big league pitcher.Maybe he's beyond redemption this time, but he's not beyond consideration.
Guest cooby Guests Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Just for the feel good ness of it.Hey btw, did I dream it or is Syndergaard out for the season?
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Not officially yet, but probably likely?
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Bring him back for his bat. It's got to have another homer in it.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 In the Twinkies farm system according to tonight's b'cast. Good luckto Uncle Bartolo....
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I haven't taken a look at what Minny's rotation looks like these days, but it's possible the Twins gave him a better shot of starting a few games as opposed to what Sandy would promise him.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I was mainly counting on an emotional lift from this. I always assumed Colon was about done and was mostly wrong for 3 years.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I was just hoping he'd be an extra arm that could stabilize the bullpen, that maybe his stuff could still work in smaller doses.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Bartolo. Twinkies. Now it all makes sense.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Bartolo wanted to remain a starter; we knew that last year. Since money is not a factor, he was going to go where he could start? That wouldn't be his role for very long, if at all, with the Mets.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Kind of funny to see #metstwitter fall over itself with the news that Bart didn't sun back to the Mets like they all expected.

It's the same, or at least, not different enough to move the needle by itself, presumably. Unless, y'know, he decided that the baseball execs he didn't know were more trustworthy than the ones he did.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 We really don't even know if the Mets kicked the tires an Colón, let alone made something akin to an offer. Gun to my head, I would guess they didn't.
