MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 In 1954, a U.S. marshal investigates the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo and even has an appearance by my pal Max Von Sydow. It was directed by Martin Scorcese.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2017 Author Posted March 15, 2017 Watched it during the storm yesterday. I saw it on regular TV with commercial interruptions, so it ran 3 hours. It does wheelies on the line between mystery and eerie(not quite horror). The story has a wraps-everything-up-neatly ending with an "oh crap" twist. I liked it.Later
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 I read this one, and enjoyed it. I don't think I saw the film but I can't remember now.

Guest sharpie Guests Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Yeah, liked the book more than the film. Second-string Scorsese though watchable enough.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 The Departed is second-string Scorcese. This... is... what's the filmic equivalent of "pulp?" This is that.A fun carny-ride on a first pass, but it doesn't hang together NEARLY as well as the book on a revisit.

Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 in the "deluded protagonist" sub-genre (like JACOB'S LADDER, OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, SIXTH SENSE, MEMENTO, BEAUTIFUL MIND, ENEMY, etc.), the plot's reliance on its twist ending makes it a one-trick pony. But its pretty well done, nonetheless.

Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 (edited) no, i'm not talking about movies where the protagonist is just wrong about something, or surprised by something, but where s/he is unaware of something fundamental about themselves, like they are, in fact, insane or dead or fictional or dreaming or a figment of someone else's imagination. They're wrong about their own fundamental reality. Besides SHUTTER ISLAND, this includes such films as:CABINET OF DR. MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2017 Author Posted March 24, 2017 Nice list. What was the fundamental reality in Invaders from Mars? I don't recall the plot.Later

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I didn't realize Forbidden Planet had a potentially fake reality. A monster projected unknowingly by the antagonist, sure, but not a whole universe.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Also, THE TRUMAN SHOW. Also also, mildly-charming indie/Serious Will Ferrell vehicle STRANGER THAN FICTION.

I didn't realize Forbidden Planet had a potentially fake reality. A monster projected unknowingly by the antagonist, sure, but not a whole universe. Well, i was on the border about this one. It's not a false reality, but the scientist's realization that the monster is actually HIM is this sort of twist. But i could be talked out of it.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 It might be a better fit if the scientist was the protagonist. How about Harvey?
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Edgy MD wrote:It might be a better fit if the scientist was the protagonist.yes, i agree. How about Harvey?According to both the play and the movie, the rabbit is real, so it doesn't count.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 That's crazy. There's no rabbit.Hey, Universal, did you pay the rabbit?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Love what this thread has turned into , I would give Shutter Island and extra half star for that
