In 1954, a U.S. marshal investigates the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane.
It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo and even has an appearance by my pal Max Von Sydow. It was directed by Martin Scorcese.

Watched it during the storm yesterday. I saw it on regular TV with commercial interruptions, so it ran 3 hours. It does wheelies on the line between mystery and eerie(not quite horror).
The story has a wraps-everything-up-neatly ending with an "oh crap" twist.
I liked it.

I read this one, and enjoyed it. I don't think I saw the film but I can't remember now.

Dennis Lehane's excellent book , really liked that , the movie IIRC was enjoyable.

Yeah, liked the book more than the film. Second-string Scorsese though watchable enough.

The Departed is second-string Scorcese. This... is... what's the filmic equivalent of "pulp?" This is that.

A fun carny-ride on a first pass, but it doesn't hang together NEARLY as well as the book on a revisit.

Yes, I think he would make this movie so he can make the other ones?

in the "deluded protagonist" sub-genre (like JACOB'S LADDER, OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, SIXTH SENSE, MEMENTO, BEAUTIFUL MIND, ENEMY, etc.), the plot's reliance on its twist ending makes it a one-trick pony. But its pretty well done, nonetheless.

Do you include Don't Look Now in that category?
Of course, one movie trailer told viewers not to reveal the ending. It was Witness For the Prosecution.

no, i'm not talking about movies where the protagonist is just wrong about something, or surprised by something, but where s/he is unaware of something fundamental about themselves, like they are, in fact, insane or dead or fictional or dreaming or a figment of someone else's imagination. They're wrong about their own fundamental reality. Besides SHUTTER ISLAND, this includes such films as:

CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI
BLACK SWAN
IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS
JACOB'S LADDER
ENEMY
VIDEODROME
VANILLA SKY
REPULSION
TOTAL RECALL
MATRIX
SIXTH SENSE
BEAUTIFUL MIND
FIGHT CLUB
SECRET WINDOW
SUCKER PUNCH
WIZARD OF OZ
DARK CITY
INCEPTION
MEMENTO
LABRYNTH
IDENTITY
INVADERS FROM MARS
5000 FINGERS OF DR. T
[crossout:2lk1dmwa]FORBIDDEN PLANET[/crossout:2lk1dmwa]
MULHOLLAND DRIVE
LIFE OF PI
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
THE OTHERS
MR. ROBOT
THE MACHINIST

on edit:
TRUMAN SHOW
STRANGER THAN FICTION

Nice list. What was the fundamental reality in Invaders from Mars? I don't recall the plot.

it was all a dream... or was it?

I didn't realize Forbidden Planet had a potentially fake reality. A monster projected unknowingly by the antagonist, sure, but not a whole universe.

Also, THE TRUMAN SHOW. Also also, mildly-charming indie/Serious Will Ferrell vehicle STRANGER THAN FICTION.

Definitely. I can't believe i missed those 2, since i really like them both.

Well, i was on the border about this one. It's not a false reality, but the scientist's realization that the monster is actually HIM is this sort of twist.
But i could be talked out of it.

It might be a better fit if the scientist was the protagonist.

yes, i agree.

How about Harvey?

According to both the play and the movie, the rabbit is real, so it doesn't count.

That's crazy. There's no rabbit.

Hey, Universal, did you pay the rabbit?

he's not in SAG.
