Last year, after a memorable tearful moment, the Mets backed out of a deal for Carlos Gomez.

Today, the Astros DFAed him.

I don't know what was in his supposedly dodgy medical report, or if that has anything to do with his problems, but this is looking to be the best deal the Mets never made.

Yah I was really thinking about Sandy yesterday, and that stupid trade that didn't happen, and how different the team would've been down the stretch last year and how it would look today without Ces (and Wilmer and Wheeler), with Fulmer back in fold, and dealing with Gomez ourselves. Alternate timeline 2015-16 Mets looks crappier to me.

But for next to nothing, I guess it wouldn't hurt to kick Gomez's shoddy tires now.

His glove has gone the way of his bat, unfortunately, so he might be too banged up to have any sort of value right now. And that's considering that a righthanded centerfielder would fill a big need for us.

That being said, it would be ironic in a funny way if we claimed him off waivers. Especially if he could somehow, you know, help.

It'd be more likely that they sign him after clearing waivers, no? I mean, he's still due some scratch. Let the Astros eat that.

Gomez has to clear waivers on the AL teams first so he might not get to the Mets (but it's possible). If the Mets want/can afford him, it could take a trade. It would be ironic if HOU wanted Flores. Perhaps the Mets "can fix" Gomez so I'd take the chance.

For all the bitching about DeAza, Gomez has somehow, amazingly been a worse player. I have old crap boxed up in my garage that I've forgotten about that I probably wouldn't trade right now for Carlos Gomez.

If he cleared waivers and we could sign him for league minimum, then welcome back, bro!

Yeah, I can't see the Mets, or anyone else for that matter, claiming him. He'll most likely clear waivers in another two days and then someone will take a chance on him for the ML minimum.
He's only signed through the end of this year so the bigger question is who gives him a chance this winter and how big a commitment it'll take.

I have no idea how to judge him at this point and I think the Astros were as perplexed as anyone barely a year after giving up four prospects for him.
