Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 For the last couple of years, I was pasting box scores from The Sporting News' web site as the basis for the UMDB box scores. I had to find a new source this year because TSN continues to dumb itself down.Check this out: http://sportingnews.hosted.core.optasports.com/?sport=baseball&page=match&id=44729Is this the worst box score ever? It doesn't tell you what position anyone played. It doesn't list any extra-base hits. Did they determine at some point over the winter that people want less information in their box scores? It's been more than twenty years since The Sporting News stopped taking itself seriously, and I still find it hard to believe. Why and how is The Sporting News even still a thing?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I imagine they subscribe to whatever wire service transmits these things so its possible the decision not to include positions could have been made further up the line. You might know if you see others doing it.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 might be better to code something to parse the data directly:http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2015/month_04/day_08/gid_2015_04_08_nynmlb_wasmlb_1/boxscore.xml
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Last year when I was doing those preview things I wasborrowing them from The Denver Post which uses SportsDirect... maybe this will help?http://stats.denverpost.com/sports-scores/Baseball-Scores-Matchups.aspx?Year=2015&Period=0408&CurrentSeason=2015

I may play around with that a bit. Thanks. I did come up with another solution; I was able to revise my code to parse the box score from Baseball Reference.
