Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Reports seem to suggest that Tejada will live, but not Young.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 That EYJ wouldn't be kept should hardly be surprising.Tomorrow (Tuesday) at midnight is the non-tender deadline so there'll likely be a flurry of names and rumors between now and then and probably a handful of minor name deals going on across the league.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Young non-tendered. Mets save some money and gain spots on the both the MLB roster and the 40, which may be just as relevant.Daniel Murphy, Lucas Duda, Dillon Gee, Jenrry Mejia, Bobby Parnell, and (surprising to some) Ruben Tejada all received offers.I'm not looking at the full list, but the Braves went nuts, non-tendering:[list:2a1b1azm][*:2a1b1azm]Kris Medlen (10-1, 1.57 in 2012; 15-12, 3.11 in 2013, second Tommy John surgery in 2014),[/*:m:2a1b1azm][*:2a1b1azm]Brandon Beachy (14-11, 3.23 over parts of four seasons, second Tommy John surgery in 2014), and[/*:m:2a1b1azm][*:2a1b1azm]Gus Schlosser (nothing to write home about in the bigs so far, but 29-19, 3.11 in the minors.[/*:m:2a1b1azm][/list:u:2a1b1azm]Dump your GM, and then dump all his players. What the hell is this organization up to?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Red Sox corner infielder Juan Francisco (not much glove/can't hit lefties/good-not-great stick against righties) non-tenderized. Watch him end up replacing LaRoche in Washington.A's NT ruthless AAAA sluggers Kyle Blanks and Andrew Brown. Both had been DFA'd already.A note on Schlosser up above: He's only got 17.2 innings in a very partial season of big-league ball, and so they weren't forced to make a decision on him. He had options, years of control, some major league experience. What gives? My suspicion is that they have some big transactions brewing, needed some roster space, and hope to bring him back on a minor league deal, and figure that, if they're going to expose him to the free agent marketplace, might as well be while the market is flooded.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Angels got angry. Non-tender went to[list:r6vah2jc][*:r6vah2jc]SS Gordon Beckham (look for him to enter into Metly conversations, despite his lousy OBP)[/*:m:r6vah2jc][*:r6vah2jc]Wade LeBlanc (mediocre lefthanded swingman)[/*:m:r6vah2jc][*:r6vah2jc]Yoslan Herrera who, like Schlosser, wasn't even arbitration eligible.[/*:m:r6vah2jc][/list:u:r6vah2jc]Herrera seems like no great shakes, but a perfectly decent --- if wild --- reliever. Gonna be hard for the Mets to shop around pitchers when folks are throwing them away.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Oooh, Padres non-tender Everth Cabreara. Right up the Mets alley:[list:3ha2uxu2][*:3ha2uxu2]Plays shortstop.[/*:m:3ha2uxu2][*:3ha2uxu2]Has had one good season in the five, but it was only 2013.[/*:m:3ha2uxu2][*:3ha2uxu2]Has an arrest for driving under the influence of pot, so he needs some New York Met-brand redemption.[/*:m:3ha2uxu2][*:3ha2uxu2]Adds the base stealing juice that they lost by letting EYJ go.[/*:m:3ha2uxu2][*:3ha2uxu2]Isn't Tejada.[/*:m:3ha2uxu2][/list:u:3ha2uxu2]
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 "Gus Schlosser" is a total midcentury journeyman-type name, like he was, say, a Houston Colt-45 or something.Blanks could be an interesting Brown-plus for the end of the bench. And, though it would be adding to surplus, some of those damaged Bravos intrigue.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 The Mets could use another righthanded OF/1B type, and Blanks fits the bill.I wonder if Young ever looked at Fangraphs and noticed that his seasonal batting averages are almost completely anticorrelated with his ground ball rate.

Plus, Sandy doesn't have to give up anything or really do anything.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Well, except to out-bid anyone else who might be interested and/or might be willing to make more promises about playing time than the Mets are willing to do.On Gordon Beckham -- a former #8 overall draft pick, he was a SS as an amateur but not as a pro (2 starts over 6 seasons). At best he could fill the Justin Turner all-purpose utility IF type of role.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 The other thing Cabrera would have to do is (a) possibly be willing to come in on a minor league deal with a big league option, and ( outclass anybody else willing to do that.

Kyle Blanks was already mentioned as a RH 1B/OF possibility, but also Gaby Sanchez or the switch hitting Justin Smoak.Justin Smoak's name on the very end of that list just about completes the group of 1B-men from the 2008 draft who have failed to live up to the hope. 1st basemen are usually not taken all that high in the draft since they generally don't have the secondary skills to fall back on if the bats don't shine, but that year's draft was unusually heavy in them with seven chosen in the first 23 picks. Only KC's Eric Hosmer is still with his original team from that draft and even he hasn't always been all they hoped from a #3 overall pick [716 OPS this season and averaging <15 HRs/yr]-- also:[u:uucw96rq]7th pick - Yonder Alonso[/u:uucw96rq], Reds: Now with SD, has a 729 lifetime OPS and played full time in only one season (2012)[u:uucw96rq]11th - Smoak, Mariners[/u:uucw96rq][u:uucw96rq]13th - Brett Wallace, Cards[/u:uucw96rq]: Been with five orgs in six years including one of them twice. Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Boy, it all went wrong for Gaby Sanchez. He was going to be a fixture at 1B for the Marlins, it seemed.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 He would have been a fixture anywhere if he could have played against the Mets all the time. This is one of those times where my (our) memories are born out by the facts as he has more career ABs vs the Mets than any other team and racked up a .321/.389/.571 stat line over 212 PAs. That compares to his overall .254/.332/.413
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Both Blanks and he are interesting, but imperfect fits. He IS a lefty killer (.291/.382/.481, w/.376 wOBA and .190 isolated power, career), but only really plays first. Blanks does a little more-- corner OF AND first-- but has surprisingly little by way of split-action, at least power-wise (.244/.342/.409 vs. lefties, .229/.307/.405 against righties, career).

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Marc Carig of Nooshday reporting that the Mets are zeroing on John Mayberry and Kyle Blanks. They apparently think that the outfield/firstbase reserve platoon looks stronger from the left side with Nieuwenhuis, den Dekker, and Allen, so they're focusing on right-handed hitters.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 So are they giving up on Campbell for that slot? After a solid year, he finished badly, so i can see why. He also doesn't have the power you might expect for that role. He seems like a AAAA player; still, i kind of liked him. But maybe they want to get one of these guys in ADDITION to Campbell, who has defensive versatility (even if he's not very good at any position). So the bench would be... Recker (RH-C), Tejada (RH-MI), Niehunheis (LH-Of),Campbell (RH-IF/OF), ____? (OF).
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 I don't think they are giving up on anybody. It's uncertain whether this reported interest is for a major league deal or a minor league one. But with Eric Young no longer on the squad, the current fifth outfielder is den Dekker and he's certainly done nothing to suggest they needn't bring in competition.I think such a signing would place more fire under his feet than those of Campbell, who would remain leader for title of Sixth-Infielder-Sixth-Outfielder-Third-Catcher Guy.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 It's not that Campbell sucks, but they'd be fools not to look to improve upon him and challenge him to earn that role at the least.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 And den Dekker and Nieuwenhuis and Recker. That's what you do to bench guys.
