G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Assuming Garrett's is September '73.Is Cleon correct, too? Same month?
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 I'll disclose the 4th Met, who's no surprise, and was casually mentioned in an earlier post, even though I wasn't quizzing for the 4th Met.1. Benny Agbayani2. Wayne Garrett3. ??????????????4. Mike Piazza
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Only because he reached base a ton when he got here...Willie Mays?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Teammate of Garrett's and Jones's...my impulse is to guess Dave Kingman but he didn't reach base enough...though I guess I'm guessing Dave Kingman.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Rusty's name came up already...so I'm not guessing Rusty...but Rusty Staub?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Wow on Not September '73 (which is why I guess the redhead). Any other guess for the extra credit would be a stab in the dark.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 G-Fafif wrote:Only because he reached base a ton when he got here...Willie Mays?Willie Mays made that list twice, but never as a Met. Mays's best OPS month (1.308 in Sept/Oct of '55) would rank 5th on the list of all-time Mets monthly OPS's.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I remember a very good start in his last full year but probably not enough power, but what the hell: Jerry Grote?
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 John Milner?It's Hammer Time!! Milner OPS'd 1.349 in March/April of '76 with a slash line of .488/.582/.767, 141st all-time.[fimg=444]http://keymancollectibles.com/photos/images/wpe15.jpg[/fimg]Here's the full list.http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=Qx04pAnd Jonah Keri's Grantland piece.http://grantland.com/the-triangle/barry-bonds-best-mlb-months/

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Are we counting months achieved while not actually being a Met?Willie Mays.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 Edgy MD wrote:Are we counting months achieved while not actually being a Met?Willie Mays.No. But let's move on to that game. Which one-time Met has the highest ranking OPS month on that list? (Hint: Stay away from Hall of Famers).
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 This quiz was particular fun because it allowed me to think about Mets on hot streaks, historic and otherwise.

I think that that was around the time that Seaver began to rave about Garrett, predicting that he'd be a future perennial all-star. I remember hearing The Guess Who's American Woman and Freda Payne's Band of Gold on my camp counselor's radio like every hour, it seemed, that Summer. Edited May 19, 2014 by Guest

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Though "dying" may be an overstatement. "Kind of wanted to guess Ken Singleton" is more accurate.
