Agbayani?

Winner. Winner.

Not only did Agbayani make the list, but he tops all Mets with an OPS of 1.395 during May of his rookie 1999 season, good for an all-time rank of 81.

when in doubt... Guess Charley Smith

There's only so much Charley Smith is gonnna do for you.

So there's a total of three left. The fourth guy shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Nah. Did Carter have a scalding month. I suddenly don't remember.

Here's a hint for the tough 2nd and 3rd place Mets -- they were Mets teammates.

Crazy September 1985.

Dave Magadan when he didn't bat leadoff?

Mags had a hellacious few weeks in 1990, when he was finally given the starting job. But I don't know if his output fell neatly within the boundaries of a calendar month.

No Mags.

Yeah. Now I remember. Not that it's so easy, being blinded by the even more dazzling September '85 of Dwight Gooden.

Been thinking of guys who raked across state lines, so to speak, who might have had a great 30-31 days but not inside contiguous monthly borders.

It's defined calendar settings that kept Jack Morris on the HOF ballot as long he stayed.

Probably falls across July and August of his big year, but Frank Thomas?

Nope.

The other Frank Thomas made that list twice.

There's some sensible flexibility in the author's definition of month for purposes of that list. March and April are combined, as are September and October.

That Morris stuff about best pitcher of the '80's decade drives me nuts.

Wayne Garrett?

What the hell made you think of Red Garrett? (all-time rank #136, 2d ranking Met, 1.351 OPS, 4hr, 16 BB)

For extra credit, give me the month and year of Garrett's awesome month.

You can eliminate any guesses that weren't Mets teammates with Red. And Cleon.
