Not all has been in futility, though. Met pitchers have walked six times, four of them by Niese, including that bases loaded jobbie that sunk Hamels the other night. They have three of the squad's 101 RBI. They have also successfully sacrificed runners ahead on the bases six times. Most impressive feat has to be that Colon only has six strikeouts, meaning he has put the ball in play twice. Go, Bartolo!!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Colon grounds out in the lone appearance by a Mets pitcher at the plate last night, raising the staff's season-long batting drought to 0-43.You're in Colorady! If you can't hit here, then where?! Help the cause!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Previously, the deepest the Mets ever went into a season without a pitcher getting a hit was 14 games in 2005. That year, Victor Zambrano was the guy who broke the streak, getting a hit on April 19.The latest calendar date that saw the first Mets pitcher get a hit was 1995, when the season was delayed by a strike. Bret Saberhagen got a base hit on April 28, in the third game of the season.Other years where the Mets went ten or more games before a pitcher got a hit were in 1997 and 2009.YearGame No.PitcherDate19622Jones, Moford4/13/196219633Hook4/11/196319642Stallard4/15/196419652Spahn4/14/196519662Hamilton4/16/196619672Seaver4/13/196719685Seaver4/15/196819697McAndrew4/14/196919705Seaver4/12/197019713Koosman4/10/197119721McGraw4/15/197219734Seaver4/12/197319742Matlack4/7/197419753Koosman4/11/197519768Koosman4/17/197619774Seaver4/12/197719785Swan4/10/197819791Swan4/5/197919801Swan4/10/198019815Scott4/16/198119827Scott4/14/198219834Seaver4/12/198319845Leary4/8/198419845Sisk4/8/198419851Gooden4/9/198519861Gooden4/8/198619874Aguilera4/11/198719883Ojeda4/7/198819895Gooden4/9/198919903Fernandez4/12/199019911Gooden4/8/199119924Young4/9/199219931Gooden4/5/199319941Gooden4/4/199419953Saberhagen4/28/199519967Isringhausen4/9/1996199711Jones4/13/199719984Mlicki04/04/199819992Watson4/6/199920005Hampton4/6/200020013Reed4/5/200120024Astacio4/5/200220034Cone4/4/200320041Glavine4/6/2004200514Zambrano4/19/200520061Glavine4/3/200620071Glavine4/1/200720085Santana4/6/2008200913Perez4/21/200920104Pelfrey4/9/201020114Young4/5/201120122Dickey4/7/201220131Niese4/1/2013
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 That's some good data crunching. You should send that one in to Cohen.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I hereby give my permission to any Twitter users in the audience to tweet the above to Gary Cohen. Giving credit to the UMDB would be nice, but not necessary.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Probably too long to tweet.Besides, we all know Gary drops by here so it's only a matter of time until he reads it on his own.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Ultimate Mets Database Facebook page wrote:Twenty-seven games into the season, and the Mets have yet to have any of their pitchers get a base hit. This is the first time that the Mets have made it to May without a pitcher getting a hit. The longest previous season-opening drought was in 2005 when Victor Zambrano (remember him?) had a fifth-inning triple on April 19 in Philadelphia in the 14th game of the season.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 That list is a great piece a work. Thanks.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 '98 I don't think is right. Matt Franco had a hit in that game, but not John.Great work though.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Yeah, John Franco went oh-for-Mets, despite most of 14 seasons with the team.

That was Matt Franco in the table, but the database incorrectly had him flagged as a pitcher. It's been fixed; the actual first Mets pitcher to get a hit in 1998 was Dave Mlicki, in the fourth game of the season.
