Dusty has long been a target of some baseball scribes, and particularly the number-crunching (sabremetric) types, who feel, among other things, that he overplays veteran players at the expense of younger ones.

Seeing Tweets that Girardi has signed a four-year extension with the MFYs.

George King of the NY Post reporting the same.
4 years at $4 mil per. Suggests that the Cubs interest spurred the Yanx to add one year to the deal.

If they want to fire somebody whose poor decisions have decided a lot of games, somebody should fire Angel Hernandez.
Just sayin'.
Back to topic.
Why hasn't Ned Yost been re-upped already?

So, according to this chart --

[u:3t219tuc]Those not coming back (with job still open):[/u:3t219tuc]
Davey Johnson, Nats - retiring
Dusty Baker, Reds - should retire
Dale Sveum, Cubs - coaching job
Eric Wedge, Sea - ditto

[u:3t219tuc]Signed only thru this season (with no new deal or options for next season):[/u:3t219tuc]
Jim Leyland, Tigers - he'll be back if he wants to be
Walt Weiss, Rockies - organization guy will get more than 1 year
Ned Yost, KC - they may not extend him
Bo Porter, Astros - what difference does it make?

[u:3t219tuc]Team options for 2014 (not yet exercised):[/u:3t219tuc]
Fredi Gonzalez, Braves - will be exercised after post-season
Mike Metheny, Cards - ditto
Don Mattingly, LA - ditto
Bud Black, SD - i think they still like him but he's been there a long while now

So that looks like 4-7 jobs open for next season.

Who are the best current candidates for:
Nationals -
Reds -
Cubs -
Mariners -
Royals -
Astros -
Padres -

yes, but for which team? I don't know where he has any connections or ties, besides Minny, Oakland, LA, Mets and D-backs.
Maybe Seattle, since he was a former PCL manager of the year.

Joe McEwing, Future Manager:

  • Likes McBunting. (He expands on why.)
  • Dislikes Infield McShifting.
  • Pitch McCounts? He thinks they overdo that.
  • McHunches vs. McNumbers? He favors a compromise approach. He also thinks you need to justify your thinking, which beats most McHunch advocates.

Royals will probably hire Dusty.

Matt Williams, currently on the DBacks staff, seems to be getting the most buzz. Could interview and/or fit anywhere I suppose but probably won't take a "bad" job (Houston, Seattle) on the theory that he'll get a good one eventually even if he has to wait a year.

Jayson Werth was recently quoted as wanting Cal Ripken to manage the Nats. Not that anyone asked him but it threw the idea out there and now Cal himself isn't batting the idea down. Sure he hasn't managed or even coached anywhere before but he's Cal Fucking Ripken.
Is he feuding with Orioles owner Angelos? (is anyone NOT feuding with him?)
Will the Nats hire him just to stick it to Angelos?
Will GM Mike Rizzo be willing to share the headlines with such a strong local presence as Ripken?

I think I like the idea of a SuperManager.

Reasonably well, but not as well as you'd think, maybe.

It's actually at Fangraphs.

You gotta do what you gotta do to get the job, i suppose. Hell, its worked pretty well for Mrs. Ripken.

Yeah, sorry about that. I accidentally included the link to the link. Who needs that?

Jim Leland stepping down, Internet reports all at once.

A few years ago people(me) would have been salivating over Leyland being available....not so much now I think.

I'm trying to find the image of Jim Leyland reacting to Prince Fielder's belly flop. I think that captures the exact moment he decided to resign.

Reds hire pitching coach Bryan Price as their manager in a two-year deal.

The Price is right, bitch!

I don't know much about this guy, he was a lefthanded pitcher but topped out in AA/AAA. The Reds have an awful lot of talent, I think they could easily have been where the Cardinals are now.

Posted

You tell me Price + Reds + Pitching + Lefthanded and I get this guy:

Had that David Cone thing going --- tough dude with a boyish all-American face. I also associate him with those big letters on the back of the Reds uniforms.

Always good to see pitchers get the big chair.

Agreed about the Reds talent, and it's not like the Tigers, where their big bats force them to trade off defense. Votto and Bruce are defensive assets. A lot of meh seasons this year from the supporting cast though. Mesaraco, Frazier, Cozart, and Phillips (despite 100 RBI) took turns slumping all year. That's talent!

During his press conference yesterday, he said he made decision after a win in Kansas City back in September. Had breakfast with the GM the next day and told him, but they didn't tell anyone else in the organization until now.
