Mex17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Any thoughts or insights as to the chances of him sticking there for us long-term? I know that they started to put him there a little bit at AA (while also having him play third as well). If we can get plus offense/power at second base, that would lessen the need to go out and find (and pay) a super-stud for the outfield (although we will obviously be needing better than what we have now).I guess where they play him mostly will dictate how they view him (either as a keeper or as trade-bait for the outfield). Either way, he is an asset so long as he rakes.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I don't think what the team has there right now is all that bad. Although I certainly think Fores (or Havens) could take the spot from Murphy in the near future, I think Murphy could make a fight of it yet.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I'd like to hope that Flores develops into a corner OF with lotsa pop.Has Reese Havens kinda fallen off the prospect chart..He turns 27 soon...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 The last time you claimed he already was 27.That depends on what "soon" means.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 10/20/1986He is likely off the radar..
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I don't know what the radar is. If he does well, he'll play. If he doesn't, he won't.Let's not rush to condemn.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I just wish he would stay healthy long enough to find out what he can do....

So I think that the way you can look at it is that one can be your intermediate to long term solution at second base, while the other is a chip that you can most certainly use for something of value.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Flores as a full-time ML 2Bman is very much just a hope at this point.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I recall one early defensive scouting report on him that projected a positional move-- from shortstop-- because of "slow feet." (Will post if I can track it down.)If his feet/footwork are too slow for short, they're likely too slow for second, where the positional athletic requirements are, essentially, "shortstop-ish skill set with range/arm deficiencies." smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I would imagine that Flores will be given the chance to play second base before the Mets do anything else with him. I don't see him coming north with the team in April, but I think his bat at least is ready for AAA.
