Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I saw one of these vintage games (playing 1868 rules) before a Somerset Patriots game a few years ago. It's fascinating how much the game has changed (players called for the kind of pitch they wanted, the 'home plate' umpire stood behind the pitcher and you could get the runner out by hitting him with a thrown baseball), and how much it's the same (9 players in the same positions, 90 feet to first, three outs, balls and strikes).Very interesting stuff.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Caught last year's 1864-rules Father's Day game at Bartow-Pell Mansion in the Bronx. Enjoyable enough-- it helped that everyone participating AND attending was a great sport-- although it might have been nice to see more actual athletes playing ball; the teams were made up of... um... a WIDE variety of body types.
