Leathersich came on with a lead and one out in the eighth tonight. Gave up one hit but got all five batters on strikeouts.

He's given up 4 runs all year, and they were all in the same game. He has not been scored upon in any other appearance.
Amazing.

He got lucky last night - gave up a 2-out single, but the inning ended on a nice play at the plate.

Adam Rubin reports that Leathersich is heading to Vegas.

Wicked Local Beverly loves the Rocket.

It’s like playing baseball on the moon. It’s crazy; the ball absolutely flies, so when you pitch, you can’t go out there scared. You can’t go out there thinking about the worst that could happen; whatever happens, happens, and you have to not dwell on it.”

That whole article seems like a gigantic exaggeration, from the Mitch Williams comparisons on down.

So he had some control issues in a short stint at high altitude and is unlikely to maintain 15 whiffs per 9 as he climbs the ladder isn't really news.

I think once they got that Mitch Williams parallel in there, they couldn't let go. As if he's the first or greatest high whiff/high walk reliever.

In a farm system loaded with young, power arms, a lefthanded strikeout machine named Jack Leathersich isn’t the Mets’ best pitching prospect. But he’s surely the most intriguing.

"Surely"? Not "possibly" or "arguably"? You've surely painted yourself into a corner with your lede.

Same old Jack. 14 Ks in 7.2 innings, along with 6 walks and a 4.70 ERA at Bingo.

Really is a make-or-break level, this AA.

ZInteresting game noite from last nite:

Jack Leathersich put up a perfect eighth inning with three groundouts, it was just the second time in his career he's thrown an inning or more and not recorded a strikeout

His ass isn't the only thing expanding. His 1.53 ERA at Bingo last year has ballooned to 4.09 this season --- at the same level.

This is not the day of the expanding man.

Jack is putting away Eastern League batters like they were burritos: 49 whiffs in 26.2 IP and cut down the walks (14, still a few too many) and ERA (2.70). Hasn't allowed a homer yet. ERA was 0.77 in the month of May.

I noted (in the 'Bully 2014' thread) how Leathersich had given up 6 walks in his first 6-2/3 innings of the season - meaning that his current 14 BBs in 26.2 IPs translates to just 8 in his last 20
Still somewhat high but obviously greatly improved since the shaky start.

Yeah, but I kind of stop looking at peripherals after seeing those 16.54 strikeouts per nine. Drrrooolll!!

And speaking of drool, look at that Chipotle ChinTM. Take it easy, Rocket. Those burritos aren't going anywhere.

Reading about the minor leagues, it seems that, beyond Leathersich, Chipotle is growing into quite the thing among the grinders in the bushes --- perhaps with prime locations in the strip malls of America's small-to-mid-sized cities, price points perfectly aligned to get the most calories-per-dollar out of a minor league per diem, and a chance to gleefully murder a fartfest of a meal at the same time.

I thought he went up to AAA last year.

Yeah, until his more than walk-an-inning + hit-an-inning + run-an-inning pace* got his ass booted back to upstate New York.
Has somewhat improved his BB/IP rates in Bingo 2014 as compared to Bingo 2013 [4.1 per/9 from 4.9 per] so now he gets to show if he can continue that at the higher level.

* 29 IP, 29 walks, 32 runs, 33 runs allowed (25 earned)
