SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHERS OF THE MONTH, MAY 2011

The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for May 2011 is JOSE REYES. This is Jose's fourth Player of the Month Award, and his first since April 2007. Reyes led the Mets in May with 110 at bats, 18 runs, 40 hits, 9 doubles, 6 triples, and in all three "triple slash" categories, with .364/.421/.555.

The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for May is MIKE PELFREY. Pelfrey is also now a four-time winner, with his most recent previous win in April of last year. Mike rebounded from a terrible April; in May he was 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA in five starts.

And the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is a third-time winner, FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ in what can be called a landslide. He nearly doubled the point total of runner-up Jason Isringhausen. Frankie had 9 saves in May, with a 1.65 ERA over 16 games and 16.1 innings. Rodriguez previously won the top reliever prize in May 2009 and June 2010.

Great job! Who would have thought Justin Turner & Daniel Murphy would both be in the top five of any months competition. Well done fellas.

I was thinking Turner would win. But I guess he didn't become a regular until around the 12th.

Justin's already climbing the sorry sordid pile of Mets who wore two and has a chance to come to define the number for the Mets sooner, rather than later.

I had a baseball card prepared for Turner just in case; it was a very tight three-way race until close to the end.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if I got to use that card before the year is out.

I like a nice new MetCard as much as anyone, and am increasingly a fan of Ginger's.

But the way Reyes has been hitting, he's our MVP this month and every month. Reyes hit better in virtually every statistical facet of the game, and would've matched Turner's RBI count if Reyes had a Reyes in front of him.

Sure, but we're measuring "of-the-game-ness" here. While Reyes was the better player day-in, day-out, I thought it might be possible that Turner's particular impact on certain games may have perhaps permitted him to outshine the shortstop.

Wondering if this is Wright's lowest finish ever.

It very well might be. If you're curious enough to do some clicking around, you can get to all the results from here.

He finished 16th in August '09, when he was beaned and out for a couple of weeks. Checked some random months when I vaguely recalled him slumping, but he's always been at or near the top of the voting.
