Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 With the half-dozen-ish bloop hits that the D-Backs had today, was there any sense that, "Yeah, Angel would have totally gotten to that" with any of them?

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 There was ONE deeper one that fell in between Beltran and Orville that made me a little wistful. But the rest? Not so much.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Pagan hasn't gotten to a few balls this year that Pagan should have gotten to.The biggest unforeseen negative so far this season has been the outfield defense.Bay was missing; Pagan not up to last season; Beltran is slower and playing in a new spot; Harris messed up a few for whatever reason; and Hairston/Duda just aren't that good.Maybe the weather, small sample size, and/or unfamiliar territory for newbies has contributed - but errors or just plain plays not made were killing us early on.Yesterday, Beltran didn't take a great route on the run-scoring bloop. Angel probably comes up with that one, but Carlos probably should have as well. The rest just seemed to find no-man's land; balls that weren't anyone's fault, just frustrating in that bloops represented four of the eight Arizona hits (4 of their 6 singles) on Saturday.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I'm curious if we'll see Beltran in center at all during Pagan's DL stint. While there are perfectly defensible competitive reasons to not put him there, too often --- at least since 1990 --- when a star gets moved to a lesser position, political reasons keep him from ever returning there, even when it makes sense, except for the most dire of emergencies.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 If he's the best choice (he certainly may not be) then what complications should we be concerned with?

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 The only allowance Collins won't make for Beltran is a potential return to center field -- a move that Beltran has neither requested nor expected. Though regular center fielder Angel Pagan remains on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, the Mets have no plans to uproot Beltran from his new home in right, knowing controversy could arise upon Pagan's return."I don't think you treat guys like that," Collins said, noting that he, Beltran and Pagan discussed that exact scenario in Spring Training upon Beltran's move from center field to right.Ugh.
