Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Albert Pujols, who treats Musial like a father figure, has asked Cardinals fans not to refer to him as El Hombre. There is only one Man in St. Louis, Pujols says.
Guest Vince Coleman Firecracker Guests Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Just for fun:Those are two very productive, very consistent dudes right there.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Those guys certainly accumulate WAR fast.. .28-.29 is what, 3 and a half days? and they got like 8 WAR.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 The Freedom-Medal committee sure takes its time getting to sports and arts figures, doesn't it?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 There's a committee? I thought it was just a pile of bones thrown to various key constituencies."Mr. President here's that list of Medal of Hon... oh, shit, I forgot to add an Asian. How old is Yo-Yo Ma?""He's already received it twice, you idiot."
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Should've put "committee" in quotes."Got a black lady in there?""How about Oprah?"(Sighs) "Just... go get me a coffee or a falafel or something."
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Stan Musial, contender for the title of Greatest Living Player, is being honored today at the White House. He looks great for 90 years old.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Musial was gracious both times I had the pleasure to meet him. I wonder if Bob Feller, a war hero in addition to his ball playing, every received that award.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 As a big card collector, it's a thrill to connect with these guys, even if it's just through a piece of paper. Musial used to be a wonderful through-the-mail (TTM) autograph signer, usually substituting whatever you sent him to sign with a postcard; I'm assuming he just signed dozens of postcards and then just had his people process them.Stan played minor-league ball in Rochester; I have a big litho print of the stadium surrounded by Red Wings autographs framed in our basement, and Musial's signed card is front and center, right at the top.

Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Relatively few ballplayers have earned the honor. Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson have received it, for example, but not Willie Mays or Yogi Berra.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Must be an anti-Mets bias! Bastards! Who let Bob Klapisch on the nominating committee?
