Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Casey Stengel managed Spahn's brief ML time with the Boston Braves prior to the war and at one point called him "gutless" or some similar term when a game he pitched wasn't going well.Stengel later told the joke on himself that if he was such a smart manager how come he referred to a future Bronze Star & Purple Heart winner as "gutless".Spahn of course famously got in a line of his own after finishing his career with Stengel's Mets and wondering why he only got to play for him both before and after he was a genius.
