The Lineup

I don't know what kind of entertaining programming "The Lineup: New York's All-Time Best Baseball Players" is providing for you, being well outside MSG's reach, but over at "Around the Horn," I read this summary of the top five New York firstbasemen of all time.

While I appreciate the hardly necessary explanation of why Eddie Murray didn't appear, I have to say, the inclusion of liveball-era flash-in-the-pan Tino Martinez kind of spun my head around. What's more (and I commented on this, because I think submitting blog responses is a real effective way to be heard and, maybe, change the world), it's emblematic of the greater whitewashing of the New York Giants from the record books. It seems as clear as Harlem sunshine that Bill Terry and Johnny Mize contributed more as New York firstbasemen than Tino Martinez. And most probably George Kelly and Fred Merkle too.

In fact, without looking very closely, I'd guess Terry should be number two.

And then I realize that I'm looking for an argument with a guy calling himself Dr. Roto.

When I first saw the promos for that series, I wondered if it would be worth watching.
Thanks for letting me know it isn't.
I did notice there will be ten episodes.
Anyone know if the tenth is for a DH or a reliever?
Or will Jeter have a show of his own?

Well, that summary of the top five New York firstbasemen belongs not to the TV show, I think, but the high-profile blogger I linked to.

The blogger (Dr. Roto) also had done catchers:
He had Dickey, Carter, Campy, Piazza and (his #1) Berra.
But I am still waiting for his first NY Giant.
Maybe he does know something, so I might watch.

Will Buck Ewing and Roger Breshanan abide?

Johnny Mize was a Hall of Famer, AND he even played for the Yankees at the twilight of his career. No way he should have been left off. I'd put Whitey Lockman and Dolph Camilli ahead of Tino Martinez.

Do I hear Moose Skowron? Del Bissonnette? Jake Daubert? Chris Chambliss?

I'll take Johnny Mize, Bill Terry and one year MFY Jack Clark. Mize & Terry bump Tblow & Mattingly.

Somewhere Joe Pepitone is upset by all this.

I think he's more upset that he no longer has a need for his hair dryer.

I can't wait for "Starting Pitchers," in which Andy Pettitte and Ron Guidry trump Carl Hubbell.

'Cause they're winners, burning inside with a rippling winner flame.

Is that a real article?
