I give it a bunch of credit for it's scale and it's ability to get that many names in one cast. But I also have to admit that more than a few of those names are guys who never impress me.There were a lot of directors, but some of the blocking in the non-combat scenes looked like you were watching a musical and they were setting up a big song and dance number. Part of that is probably Richard Beymer (Tony from West Side Story) monologuing.
