Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Tobi Stoner is the second Met to have been born in Germany, and the fourth to have been born in Europe.Who was the other German-born Met? (This should be easy, I think.) And who were the other two? (One was born in France and the other in England.)
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Ron Gardenhire for Germany? Not sure of the others.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Yes, Gardenhire is the other German-born Met.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Yes, and yes. That concludes our Tobi Stoner-inspired trivia!Thank you for coming, and drive home safely!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I'm frightened by the fact that I knew both of those (all three actually) almost instantly.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 The only one I could have gotten off the top of my head was Gardenhire. When I found Rohr and Bochy, I thought, oh yeah, I knew that. Okay, who can name the eight who were born in Japan, or the ten who were born in Mexico?

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Well, of course, the Japanese guys are more easily distinguished by their names; the only difficulty is remembering who all of them were since many were just brief ships that passed our way in the night.Mexican guys not so easy to separate although I tend to think of them as mostly brief and semi-anonymous middle-relievers too.Japan - Nomo, Yoshii, Shinjo, Matsui, Takahashi, ... plus a bunch of guys who were like Takahashi but weren't himMexico - Ollie, Armando Reynoso ... plus a bunch of guys who looked and threw like Armando Reynoso. Oh yeah, and Elmer Dessens
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Have we alreadly purged Luis Alaya from our memories?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 I mistyped, there are actually 9 Japanese-born Mets.Seven have been mentioned so far: Hideo Nomo, Kaz Matsui, Ken Takahashi, Masato Yoshii, Takashi Kashiwada, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Kaz Ishii. Two remain.Chuck Estrada was born in California.Mexicans named so far: Alex Trevio Armando Reynoso Elmer Dessens Karim Garcia Luis Ayala Oliver Perez Ricardo RinconThree more. Two of them share a surname with other, non-Mexican Mets players.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Francisco Estrada. I know it was an Estrada!
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Satoru Komiyama!

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Mister Zero, Shingo Takatsu![/quote:3fsfixuv]Yes! And that closes out the Japanese portion of our little contest. Two more Mexicans remain. Both are pitchers, and while they weren't teammates, their combined Mets tenures covered three consecutive seasons.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I'm tapping my brain and instead of coming up with Mexicans, I get guys who played in the Mexican League.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 I have to confess that I would be terrible at this question.Except for the most prominent players, like Reyes or Delgado or Beltran or Santana, I have a very hard time remembering who's Mexican or Dominican or Puerto Rican or Venezuelan.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Speaking of Beltrans... howzabout Rigo?I've got the other, too. Just want to see if anyone else gets it...
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Rigo Beltran it is.One Mexican remaining, and he's a 1990's-era Mets pitcher.
Met Hunter Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Was Armando Reynoso mentioned? I thought a Stoner inspired trivia thread would have mentioned Jason Roach, Jung Bong or Phil Coke.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Jeez, I forgot about this thing. The remaining Mexican is... Juan Acevedo.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I was drawing a violent blank.
