bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Adam Rubin has some inside information about which minor leaguers will be joining the Mets:Catcher Josh Thole, reliever Eddie Kunz and first baseman/outfielder Nick Evans are expected to highlight the call-ups when rosters expand in September, the Daily News has learned.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2009/08/exclusive-september-call.html#ixzz0Oy7hDCRa
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 It makes sense to check Thole out as at the moment Santos looks like the 2010 starter.Evans..shit or get off the pot..release or trade Sheff and play Evans every day
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I'll get hammered for saying this but I don't see Evans as much of a player.I've been underwhelmed by him.

nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 I'm also unimpressed/underwhelmed by Evans, but if he's taking ABs away from a guy who isn't part of next year's plan (Sheffield) I wouldn't complain about it much.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Nick Evans reminds me of Jeff Duncan.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Makes sense to trade Sheff for prospects, whether or not Evans is the future.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 I listen to the ends of a lot of Buffalo games while driving home from work. The Buffalo manager (Ken Oberkfell) doesn't even trust Kunz late in close games. And for a large part of the year, his ERA looked like the model number for a new Boeing airliner. I'm thinking his callup is part of a deal made when he was drafted two years ago and not based on merit.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 (edited) Nick Evans reminds me not of Jeff Duncan. Duncan was a plus centefielder who couldn't hit a lick thrown into the breach in a centerfielder crisis. If Duncan had performed with the bat as well as Evans --- as underwhelming as Evans offensive performance has been --- he'd still be playing.I'm pretty certain Kunz's callup has nothing to do with a mysterious special deal. Guest Vince Coleman Firecracker Guests Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Nick Evans Vs. Left-handed pitching:Minor league career (517 PAs):.300/.378/.553Major league career (90 PAs):.341/.407/.512Nick Evans is already a major-league ready player, as long as he's used properly.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Evans is just 23 and has 17 extra-base hits in 153 major league at-bats, along with a .919 OPS against lefthanded pitching. On the other hand, his 2/22 BB/K ratio in 71 career AB's against righties is rather dismaying. He's got a lot of learning to do against righties, for sure, but he's still young enough, and he'll at least be a useful platoon player at this level.

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Are the Mets going to call up anybody on Tuesday? Buffalo's season ends tomorrow. These players are on the 40-man roster so I'm guessing that they'll be added:Eddie KunzAndy GreenA. Reyes.Arturo Lopez is also on the 40-man but I don't know who he is. Robinson Cancel is in Buffalo and was recently a Met but he was DFA'd so he's not on the 40-man. Neither is Jesus Feliciano and he had a very good season, hitting .311 with 1 HR, 42 RBI, and 13 SB. He was named the team MVP.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Why bother?I would hope that none of those Buffalo players would be competing for a spot on the 40 man roster next year, even Kunz. Isn't the call up season traditionally the time when you check out the prospects? This is sad.Later
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 The Mets did most of their September call ups in June.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I don't get that "why bother?" Is it such a bother? These people have jobs to do. Should the team just release everybody?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I have nothing against them as individuals. If they're going to pick up some major league cash, that's fine. But, other than Kunz, they are known qualtities. As a fan of a team with a lot of needs, I'd rather they be seeing what some other players can do. Major league playing time is precious. Its better to use it to evaluate some kids. Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Which kids would Jesus Feliciano be taking time from?Which kids would Eddie Kunz and Argenis Reyes be takign time from? Like it or not, these are the kids, along with other potential callups like Tobi Stoner and Adam Bostick.I mean, I guess you're saying to not call up Cancel or Green. And that's fine. But if Cancel came up, I'm sure the point wouldn't be to pile playing time on him, but to have him warm up pitchers and ease the transition for pitchers that he's caught in AAA.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I hope they call up Bostick, or at least put him on the 40. He put up respectable numbers as a lefty coming out of the pen, and I think he's eligible for minor-league free agency in the offseason if he's not on the 40 (and I know he'd be eligible for Rule V). I think he has enough potential value to justify protecting him.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 Edgy gets it right: Toby Stoner will be wearing the Mets uni tonight. No word on any other call-ups.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Oh good. Stoner has also been around long enough to be Rule V eligible, and he could at least be a viable bullpen option next year.
