Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Just looking over the stats over at Baseball-Reference - Luis Castillo is leading the league in at-bats per strikeout, at 14 per. That's pretty impressive.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 I'm not too impressed by that alone because slap-hitters shouldn't strike out anyway.i just realized how many crazy stats BR has hidden, including steals/caught of individual bases, and my new personal favorite OOB (Outs on Base) which tracks the number of times a player makes an out on the basepaths that isn't a force-out, good for finding uas some goats in the player of the year voting later on in conjunction with "extra bases taken percentage", the percentage of time the runner advanced more bases than the hit (more than 1 on a single, more than 2 on a double)they have pinch-hitting stats too.and finally the category that DOES impress me about Luis Castilllo, pitches per plate appearence, which now stands at 4.31, a career high.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I'm impressed that he's drawing so many walks, given that he's not much of a threat to hit anything more damaging than a single. I'd have figured by now that pitchers would just throw him strikes. They seem to have done that with Cora, whose walk on July 31 was his first of the month (he already has as many walks in August as he did in July).
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Castillo's always drawn a higher than average number of walks - although this is looking like his walking-est year ever.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 it is min-boggling, because with a 3 ball count he should be getting BP fastballs down the pipe, at least with nobody in scoring position. its to his credit that he gets the walks anyway
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I'd like to see the number of times he's taken the first strike he sees. It's got to be over 90%.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Not just first strikes, Luis swings at a smaller pct of total pitches thrown to him than anyone in the league.I forgot the exact numbers but I heard/read this stat just recently at it wasn't even all that close between him and the rest of the pack.

Now, he's like a parody of himself.
