The idea was for Omir Santos to set up way off the plate and see if Jeter would chase, but K-Rod missed the spot and threw a strike. Manuel knows Jeter is relatively patient, but he just wanted to see if the Yankees captain would swing at an awful pitch before conceding the at-bat.
Manuel recalled the Cubs-White Sox rivalry, when Sammy Sosa was so intent on driving in a run with two in scoring position, first base open and the pitcher up next, "He swung at pitches almost in the dugout." Manuel also noted that Carlos Lee while with the White Sox had no discipline once a player reached scoring position.

it makes sense because perhaps with Rivera on deck Jeter would be ordered (or think for himself) to try and hit pitches out of the zone because you'd rather try and hit a single on a pitch off the plate than have Rivera come up.
