A stab in the dark move for the most part.

Originally signed by the Yanx as a 16 y/o, they bet on his large frame and gifted athleticism by making the idiotic decision to give someone that age not only $2mil+ dollars but also a major league contract!! That basically meant that such an unpolished talent had to be in the big leagues by age 20 where he predictably struggled. By that time he had been traded for that other athletic stud turned bust Drew Henson and, playing only sparsely because he was nowhere near ready, he never improved his awful plate discipline and OF play. And the main problem is, he still hasn't - as Cincy, Boston & Washington have discovered since.

Has upside, but is coming off a disastrous year. The Nationals' ridiculous glut of righty corner outfielders made it impossible to keep him. If he plays well in AAA, he'd give the Mets another viable bench option should Sheffield or Tatis get hurt. Not sure I'd expect much, but there's nothing to lose.

Baseball Reference says originally signed by the Mets, before the signing was voided 8 months later...then the Yanks swooped in.

I have no memory of ever having Pena in any capacity.

We never did really.
The signing was deemed illegal for some reason (age probably) so he went back on the market having never played a game in the NYM system.
