]Report: Mets sign Fossum

The Mets New York Mets have signed LHP Casey Fossum to a minor league contract, according to a report in the Buffalo News.

Fossum, who pitched with the Tigers last season, has struggled throughout his eight-year major league career that has also included stints with the Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Rays. Fossum has a career 5.47 ERA to go along with a 40-53 record.

Fossum, from Cherry Hill, NJ, will likely need an impressive Spring Training to make the Mets roster as a lefty specialist.

Fossum was the subject of many 'Don't Trade Him' cries from Boston fans back in his prospect days.
He eventually went to Arizona in the Schilling deal.

Now already 30 y/o with a not very impressive trailing him, he's nothing more than LH filler at best.

Has his own brand of eephus, named the Fossum Flip.

Fossum was the centerpiece of the Schilling deal for Arizona. I bet the Red Sox are still laughing over how that one turned out.

At this point, Fossum is a lottery ticket and not much else. While I suppose it's possible that he'll remember what it was that made him such a valued prospect, I'm betting that he spends the whole season in Buffalo.

I'm hoping he spends the whole season in Buffalo! Anything else is a sure sign that the Mets staff is in serious trouble.

Trouble anyway. But into every season a little Rick Anderson must fall.

No, not really. It could be a sign that Fossum is pitching better than one guy in the Mets bullpen, and promoting him would improve the team.

I don't see the point in hoping a Triple-A player isn't going to perform well enough to help the major league team.

My hope is that the ML staff performs well enough that they need not call on Fossum.
