Interesting Cards

Nothing happening in the baseball forum is leading me to force the issue.

This card of Dennis Ribant is interesting because:

  • He never played for Kansas City, but stuck around camp long enough to get marketed as a Royal

  • His hat is over-structured and worn high on his head, in the dorky manner more reminiscent (to me, at least) of the mid-seventies, though this is 1969 here.

  • He's wearing a windbreaker under his uniform, suggesting that he's training in Arizona where cool desert mornings give way to afternoon heat, but the Royals didn't move to Surprise until 2003. Homey's wearing that getup in Florida.

  • Similarly, the grass being 64% dead suggests a desert locale. Along with the low-slung house-of-incarceration cinder-block clubhouse, it looks like the Royals are running a Mickey Mouse operation in Ft. Myers, and Ribant would maybe count himself lucky when he got sold to the Cardinals before the start of the season.

  • Girly color to the circle that indentifies him. Such circles in other years (or on other cards) typically are pastelly, but still usually look like they could be the secondary color on somebody's uniform.
Dennis Ribant, first winning starting pitcher in Mets history.

This one always amused me.

The whole thing is great but I was always amazed that whoever did the pre-photoshop photoshop got away with the hapless rendering of the interlocking 'NY'.

It looks like its melting.

Jeez, you didn't have to pull out the bazooka in round one.

Also notice that Ribant's road grays look pretty white, unless the Royals wore Kansas City on their home uniforms that first year. Or, being Topps, the color is just washed out in the photo.

This card is interesting because:

  • This is the one that the kept?

  • The guy looks drunk.

  • Or stoned.

  • Or mentally ill.

  • And his mother dressed him pretty ugly also. "Hey, I've got an idea! Let's dress Team USA like the Indians during their Andre Thornton period. America loved that team!"
I would think that Team USA must have signed on with a wildcat card company, but there the Topps logo is in the corner. This is not Topps at their finest.
