Frayed Knot

As if on cue, Baseball Prospectus has a quickie review of which 3rd base coaches are sending runners to their doom most often.
(compiled prior to last night's games)

Of course you can't really draw a lot of conclusions from something like this as there's no context included - but at least the combo of NYM coaches is down towards the bottom of the list even if last night's foolish executions are tacked on.

Does anyone remember the situation where we had [u:e6773d0494]a batter[/u:e6773d0494] thrown out at home? If I'm reading their chart correctly it means that we either had an inside-the-park HR try foiled or a hit-and-error combo which resulted in the same thing. Acc to this there have been 5 of those in MLB this year.

Sandy Alomar foolishly helping Reyes to go for the cycle with an ITPer this year and he was out by 2 Chavezes.

Against the D-Backs at Chase Field , Jose walloped one of the CF wall in the eighth inning that comes hard of the wall and Sandy waves him home for the inside the park home run , except Reyes was out by a mile.

IIRC that was one of those nights where Alou made his come back.

what kills me is that BOTH TIMES it's 0 outs, endy's running, you got beltran and delgado coming up.
to me, neither time made sense. beltran's been the best in the linup with RISP and delgado's been hot lately. why run?

I remember that play very well. Needing a HR to complete a cycle late in a game, Reyes blasts a flyball to straightaway CenterField that hits the top of the wall on a fly and bounces straight back to the center fielder uneventfully. The relays all the way back to the catcher were perfect. Barry ("The Flash") Allen couldn't of scored from home on that play. I remember this play well because I thought it was one of the most disgusting, unprofessional things I'd ever seen in a MLB game. Reyes was smirking the whole way back to the dugout as if he were a 10-year old child in a neighborhood pick-up game. That bad play didn't cost the Mets on that day, as they were able to preserve their safe lead. A part of me was hoping for the Mets to blow that game all because of that Reyes out.

The distressing thing to me is hearing these poor calls explained away as mistakes in judgement when they in actuality were acts of stupidity -- not knowing, or forgetting, the base-out situation and what it should mean as you assess the risk. A good 3B coach also should have pegged Blanton as a contact pitcher.

Alomar made these mistakes repeatedly and wasn't taken off the beat until "promoted" to be Jerry's aide-de-camp. Aguayo reportedly is a political appointment from the Tony Bernazard Shadow Government: No way the Mets interfere with that, or you know, request someone competant man that role and save the political appointees to meaningless jobs like hitting coach.

Does anybody really treat third base coach like a spot where you put somebody who has demonstrated skill on the job?

It seems to me these days that there are instructors (batting and pitching coach), aides de camp (third base coach and bench coach), and honorary spots (bullpen and first base coach).
