metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 ]THE ASSOCIATED PRESSATLANTA - Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz says he will have season-ending shoulder surgery, but hopes to return in 2009.The Braves called a news conference before Thursday's game against the Florida Marlins to discuss Smoltz's ailing shoulder.Smoltz and general manager Frank Wren declined comment until the briefing, but the pitcher said on his radio show that he will miss the rest of the seasonA big blow for the Braves , and for Smoltz obviously , coming back from that surgery won't be easy ,and at his age it will be tougher.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Staying healthy during his career is the only thing that's kept him from being on the Glavine/Maddux level.I think he may be HoF anyway (even if he doesn't come back) but he'd be in 300-W territory and a virtual lock if you give him bck the two seasons he lost plus the 4 he spent in the pen.

Even if we were to assume that he would have had 15 wins for each of those bullpen years (4 seasons), and 2000 (he missed the whole year), and this season -- which I believe is a generous assumption -- he's still 9 wins short.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 It appears there are dueling Smoltz threads.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 And now a 2nd 2R HR (Ramirez this time) and now Florida leads 6-4 top 9, still only 1 out.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 What I find interesting is that while on the DL the past several weeks( came back Monday) Smoltz changed his pitching motion going to a three quarter delivery thinking it would ease the pain in his shoulder , seems like a desperate act but I suppose at his age why not try that.
