Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 First black manager to manage an integrated ball team in professional baseball history?
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 From Wiki, Roy Campenella of the Nashua Dodgers.Though shouldn't that fact be "unofficial" though as he took over a game after Walt Alston was ejected. Can someone give me a list of all the coaches who "took over" for Bobby Cox after all his ejections? Do you want to fork over all those wins and losses over to those guys?I'm sure whatever the outcome of that game was, it belongs to Walt Alston, not Roy Campenella.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Hey SteveJCheater - You're supposed to guess. We all can find it if we want to.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 At least he cited a source. Next time he'll look it up but will claim he got it on his own.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Alston turned the reins over to Campy with the team down three. They ralleid back to win when he sent pitcher --- and the team's only other African-American --- Don Newcombe up to pinch-hit, and got a two-run game-tying homer. And yes, Steve, I'm on record as wanting managers who substitute on sick days or take over mid-game to get credit for what they do.
