Willie: 'I love the squeeze'

"Coulda fooled us" say most fans and announcers who have trouble remembering any since he's been here -- but Willie claims (on the pre-game radio spot) that the squeeze was on Friday night and that it was [u:4f5c36c8f8]Castillo[/u:4f5c36c8f8] who missed the sign*, not Pagan.

He went on to add that he's always liked the squeeze play as a tactic but hasn't felt he's had guys who were comfortable pulling it off when they absolutely, positively had to get one down. But he does feel that with Castillo and went with it.




* For those not watching, Pagan came charging in from 3rd on the pitch and probably stained his undies when Castillo, batting RH-ed, swung away ... fortunately for both stategy and health he fouled it off to the 1st base side.

I heard that interview. Willie also said that he likes to squeeze a lot with Reyes on first base. Willie said there's less of a risk of injury to the runner.

Willie's gonna start today's game by having Reyes squeeze as soon as he leads off the game.

You know .... one of the reasons that David Wright is cutting back on his late night carousing is because Willie thinks that Wright should be practicing the squeeze play more often.

I would concede that the squeeze play is a productive out. Especially when the runner from third scores.

I once saw Willie put on the squeeze play with a runner on third and two outs. After the batter was predictably thrown out at first by the pitcher, Willie came out to argue the play with the ump for about half an hour. Willie wasn't arguing the play at first, which wasn't even close; Willie argued that the run should count because the runner crossed home plate before the out at first was made.

RMPL stands for read more, post less. It is often used here when a poster seems to get carried away making posts to themselves or simply to build their post totals in hopes of reaching (or escaping) a particular player designation.

I'm glad to have you here and you have had a lot of interesting points to make in other discussions, but in this thread you seem to be conversing with yourself just to make posts. As much as possible, we try to put quality of posts above quantity. Most of us, myself included, sometimes stray from that and when we do we are often given a nudge from our fellow members to get us back on track.

I didn't intend to write all those separate posts. I just wrote one post. And then like 45 seconds later, I thought of a follow-up. Spontaneously, and without any RMPL post-padding premeditaded calculations. And then another follow-up after the first follow-up. And I thought that each of those posts, as they came to me, would stand up well on their own, individually. I didn't have any advance knowledge or plan that I would write a coupl'a posts that would appear to have me talking to myself. It just came out that way. So now you know.
