Guest attgig Guests Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 So I understand everyone yappin about Willie. But as I can tell, it's the pitching that has really screwed us a lot. (and the d).Does Peterson get any flack for not fixing Mota? For the decline of Maine (or is that a blister)? For Shoenweiss?I'm not bitter at Peterson or anything, but just wondering... some of those guys in the pen has sucked all year, with no hope for improvement. Isn't that Peterson's job?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Yes, but I think some of these guys are sow's ears. On the whole, Peterson and his approach have been successful and I don't want to jettison him just because he couldn't salvage Scott Schoeneweis. He should be asked some hard questions, though, such as, "What happened to John Maine in the last two months?"
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I don't have a problem with Peterson. The starting staff has been better than I expected it would be this year. I blame Omar more than Rick for the troubles out of the pen.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Peterson gets flack for going out to talk to John Maine and a bomb coming on the next pitch. It's hard to know what to hang on coaches, but I always like to hit the pitching coach with whatever that first pitch after a conference is (Tim McCarver's rule: look fastball).
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 If I remember right, he did that with another pitcher (Perez maybe) about a week ago.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Think you're right. Is it "flack" or "flak"?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I think Rick takes his share of the blame along with the rest of the coaching staff, not making excuses for him but Maine is going through his first full season so with this experience and innings under his belt it should help him in the future, which doesn't help the team right now though.Isn't Shoenweiss carrying an injury of some sort,Mota not being with the team for all that time can't have helped, didn't Maine throw a slider after the mound chat with Peterson?
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I agree. Most of Omar's moves this off-season didn't pan out -- but he was so right for so long that you had to figure a couple would go the other way.But you have to wonder. Heath Bell is sure doing well, but would he have done as well with the Mets? His past performance wouldn't show that.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 It's just that our pitchers fall to pieces once guys get on base.
