Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 All indications are that Pedro Martinez will be starting for St. Lucie tonight vs. the Brevard County Manatees, with Rick Peterson and others in attendance. The St. Lucie site says that'll be at 7:00 PM, but their schedule says they have a doubleheader tonight starting at five.SNY's schedule says they're showing the Cyclones tonight, in lieu of the Mets. Maybe that'll change. There's also speculation out there that Pedro's next start could be for Brooklyn. I'm hoping instead for New Orleans. The Manatees, as you might have guessed, are the Brewers FSL affilliate. Firstbaseman Chris Errecart and leftfielder Cole Gillespie are the best hitters, along with a .300-hitting catching staff of Carlos Corporan and Angel Salome.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Martinez allows 2 unearned runs in 5 innings in third rehab startPORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -Pedro Martinez allowed two unearned runs over five innings Monday in his most impressive outing since he began throwing after offseason shoulder surgery. With Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson and bullpen coach Guy Conti in attendance, the right-hander struck out four and walked one in a rehab start with Class-A St. Lucie."I got groundballs when I wanted and those are the things that I want to see,'' Martinez said. "Regardless of what happens, if they go through or whatever, I just want to get those ground balls.''Back-to-back errors and a wild pitch in the fifth inning led to both of Brevard County's runs off Martinez, who threw 72 pitches. He lowered the number of pitches he expected to throw after waking up Monday with a sore neck, though he said it did not bother him during the start."I was very pleased with the way my sinker was working and also the curveball. It was very steady,'' Martinez said. "I can't recall one of those breaking balls being bad and getting those cheap outs with the sinker and getting those groundballs when I wanted.''It's unclear where the three-time Cy Young Award will pitch next.Martinez gave up five runs and six hits in three innings in his first rehab start on Aug. 8. He was charged with three runs in four innings with the Mets' Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team last Tuesday.Peterson said before the game that the two were there for moral support more than to critique the performance. Martinez largely will decide whether he needs to face hitters of a higher caliber before playing in New York."That would be a determination that probably Pedro would make over anyone else,'' Peterson said."It's all predicated on what he feels about how he's doing.''Martinez said he just has to be calm and let things happen.Mets outfielder Endy Chavez also went 3-for-4 and scored a run in St. Lucie's 4-3 win. Chavez is working his way back from a strained left hamstring.

Guest Rotblatt Guests Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 metirish wrote:What kinda giddy up is Pedro getting on his fast ball?,will Brooklyn be his next stop for a few starts?According to the Times, he hit 89 a few times last night. They didn't mention the range in which he was generally working, but in his last start, it was (according to one of the other rags) around 84, topping out at around 87-88. So it's improving, sounds like. Peterson also said something along the lines of "his velocity should increase a bit."If he's got his fastball popping into the mid-80's, with the ability to dial it up to 90 when he needs to, I bet he'll be in good shape. Not so much that velocity is that important to him, but that in the past, it seemed like a pretty good indicator of how healthy he is.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Per SNY.tv:Martinez walked one and struck out four as his fastball topped out at 89 mph, an improvement from his last outing six days ago.
