IGT: Mets vs. Dodgers

Pedro Martinez, effectively demoted, will be starting at noon today for the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets against the Gulf Coast Dodgers. As is the custom with the Gulf Coast League, admission will not be charged.

I'm slapping up an in-game-thread, but I'm not sure there's any way to follow the game.

Also rehabbing with the pre-school Mets is Ambiorix Burgos

What can we expect today,I'd take Pedro going six innings and pitching into the seventh would be a bonus ,not really caring a whole lot about runs but more about strikes and balls and of course how he feels and if he's throwing what he wants to throw.

No details on the game yet, but four of this afternoon's Gulf Coast League games have been rained out.

I'm thinking that, if the rain stops him today, he may go for St. Lucie tonight.

] Pedro OK in second rehab start PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Pedro Martinez is pushing the idea that he needs just one more rehab start before joining the Mets in New York. His pitching lines in his first two rehabilitation starts wouldn't indicate he is ready, but after throwing four innings Tuesday with the rookie Gulf Coast League Mets on Tuesday in Florida, Martinez is growing anxious to make his return to the big leagues. "I need to pitch in the big leagues," Martinez said. "I feel like my pitches are improving, but I can't tell you how good I am until I get a big-league hitter out. ... I am already pushing the issue, but it's going to take me a little while still. The three-time Cy Young winner threw 60 pitches, 47 for strikes against the Gulf Coast Dodgers, and was perfect through three innings before giving up a three-run home run to Pedro Baez on a cutter with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. He allowed three runs and three hits with one walk and four strikeouts for the game. Martinez used 29 pitches the fourth inning, 11 of them to Andrew Lambo, who walked, and the bottom of the frame took so long that rehabilitation pitching coordinator Randy Niemann decided to send him to the bullpen to finish with 20 fastballs. "I like this outing a lot more than the other one," Martinez said. "I am more in command, and I actually felt like I pitched a little bit, making pitches where I wanted to, and overall it was a jump ahead. It was a great improvement." The 35-year-old isn't concerned that he has given up a combined eight runs and nine hits in two games against hitters yet to reach Class AA. His focus is getting individual pitches to the level he wants them, especially the sinker that led to two home runs in his first start with Class A St. Lucie on Aug. 8. Martinez said most of his pitches worked well Tuesday, but now he needs to become more consistent because that is what will get him back to New York. It is likely he will pitch one more game in Florida, which could be with Class A St. Lucie on Monday, but Martinez said his schedule is still up in the air. "I was actually asking (trainer) Chris (Correnti) where will he see me from now on, and he said without a doubt I need at least one more outing," Martinez said. "I need to work on some other things." Pedro has been balking at traveling for any of these rehab starts and he's apparently getting his way. He doesn't want to go to Bignhamton and this game was in the GCL because the High-A team was on the road in Florida.
So it sounds like he's going to go straight from Rookie League & A-ball players right to the majors.

Rick Peterson is going to be in attendance for Pedro's next start for St. Lucie on Monday. I'm assuming Omar Minaya will also.

Current projection for his Shea debut, according Newsday's David Lennon, is the September 7-9 series against Houston at Shea. Obviously, that could change if the wind blows funny.
