Paulie Suspended for Two Games

About what I was expecting.

I don't think they'll risk going that long without a legit backup, although I'm not sure who's on the 40-man (I doubt Sandy Almoar is).

No word yet on whether or not he'll appeal. He couldn't play tonight (or tomorrow obviously) if he doesn't and players frequently do appeal these things if only to either time the suspension better or to get his version of the story on the record. I suspect he'll have some choice things to say about the ump evne though there's almost no chance that he'll get the sentence reduced.

Let's draft Paulie's appeal for him. I'll start:

"Hey, commish, how they hangin'? Ya gotta listen, that motherfuckin' ump of yours..."

2 games is fine. throwing equipment needs to be a short suspension even if you didnt hit anyone or even target someone with it. its dangerous, childish, and completely uncalled for.

Wondering about a technicality....we have a doubleheader on Friday, if he were to take the penalty on Thursday and then the first game of the DH on Friday, would he be allowed to play the 2nd game of the DH? Or if he sat the 2nd game of the DH and then the next game, would there be anything wrong with him catching the first game of the DH?

He should try to find a way to serve his suspension during the two games of the doubleheader. He would only catch one of them anyway, so it effectively turns his suspension to basically one game.

Yes -- it's two games, not two days.

You don't want to do that at all. Well, maybe you do. Would you rather have two games of Castro or one game of Castro and one game of random-AAA-catcher?

Good point, Elster. I hadn't really thought about it in quite those terms. Probably better to have Castro make 2 starts with DeFelice/Alomar as a back up than to have Castro start one game and DeFelice/Alomar start the other.

LoDuca and Castro are the only catchers listed on the Mets 40 man roster.

You're really not going to want any catcher catching both ends of a double header.

Better to have Castro play two night games in a row and then have LoDuca come back. Bring up DiFelice to be a spectator.

If they send somebody down to make room for DiFelice or Alomar, then doesn't the guy they send down have to stay there for at least a week, unless somebody else is injured?

Maybe they should thinking about sending down someone who gets used infrequently, like Sele. They can send down Sele, promote DiFelice. Then send down DiFelice and promote Pelfrey. After a week, send down Pelfrey and promote Sele again.

I don't know if Sele's contract or status would prevent them from doing that without his agreement, but perhaps he can be coaxed to agree.

He'd have to clear waivers.

A fun option for only two games (or one, if it gets reduced) is to activate Tom Nieto or Dave Racaniello.

LoDuca's hearing won't be until next week sometime and the plans are to let things be until at least then, meaning that he'll be active for the DH on Friday and the whole Philly series.

After that they can either decide to;
- drop the appeal and start serving right then, which has the advantage of choosing which games you'll sit out.
- go through with the hearing and maybe get it reduced to one game. The disadvantage there it that you may not get it reduced and he'd have to start serving the suspension (whatever length) as soon as the ruling comes down, probably that same day.
