metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Yes that game against Arizona he was brilliant going up against Webb, the game he pitched against the yankees sticks in my head too...a couple of innings in a bad outing.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I guess being a turning point in the bizarre career of Joe Cubas is a pretty fair legacy also.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 He was overweight and had short hair.I never thought he 'looked' Cuban.I wondered what and El Dookie talked about.I was surprised at how well he pitched and then how badly he pitched.I wanted him to hit a homerun so the back page of The Post and The News would both say 'SOLER POWER!' on the same day.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'll always associate Soler with Jim Duquette. Seemed like the Mets had the brakes on Duke at nearly all times but they let him go crazy just once and he signs a mysterious Cuban whose visa problems and so forth prevent his arrival -- and what might have been his best years as an athlete -- until after Duke himself is long gone.I'd be shocked ... Shocked! ... if Soler doesn't wind up with Duke and the O's, especially now that they have Norfolk as a AAA base.

Shocked!. !!="Johnny Dickshot"].. if Soler doesn't wind up with Duke and the O's, especially now that they have Norfolk as a AAA baseWhy do the O's having Norfolk as their AAA team make you think they'd be more inclined to grab Soler? What would Norfolk have to do with their interest in him?(thanks to cooby for the 'shocking' dude)
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Once he finally got onto these shores, Soler set up housekeeping in the Norfolk area where he presumably still lives. That - and Duquette if he's still interested - would make Orioles/Norfolk a logical choice if he's free to strike his own deal.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Was en route to see Soler throw against the Orioles last June (his last better than decent start, it would turn out) when I crossed paths with JD. Told him where I was going. Ah, he said, Soler...gotta go see him soon. Yes, I thought, this is quite a bonus, watching a hot new Met take the mound.I once felt the same way about getting a gander at Masato Yoshii. Those feelings hardly ever last.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 My lingering memory of Alay Soler will be the mysterious 2006 Topps card that appeared in packs last season. It was some sort of weird short-printed insert, and started selling for $60-$100. I was tempted to jump in on one, but figured it wouldn't be worth it in the long run.I think I was probably right, although there are two listed on eBay right now at $130-$150.
Guest holychicken Guests Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I remember predicting he would win 20 games last year.I was soooooo close.
