PORT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- The New York Mets on Wednesday signed veteran infielder Wil Cordero, who did not play last season, to a minor league contract.

In 29 games for Washington in 2005, Cordero batted a woeful .118 (6-for-51). He hit just .197 (13-for-66) with Florida the previous season.

Cordero, 35, is joining his ninth team in a career that began in 1991. The Puerto Rican native is a career .273 hitter with 122 homers and 566 RBI in 1,247 games.

Wow, a serial wife-beater. Maybe Steve Phillips is back on the payroll.

The Mets went down this road, signing him in mid-summer and releasing him two weeks later after he hit .129 for the Tides. I'm not sure, but that may be the last organized baseball he's played.

Wasn't Jose Offerman available?

If they brought him up, he would fill the Ed Bouchee Law and Order SVU memorial roster spot.
