Victor Diaz Deathwatch

Marty Noble:

Diaz is having a poor season in Triple-A -- a .223 batting average with 23 extra base hits in 346 at-bats. The Mets message is a very audible "No." Diaz's work ethic and attitude seem to be affected by the level to which he is assigned. He doesn't appear to be a hungry player and seemingly has no future with the Mets -- Minor Leagues or big leagues. A resemblance to Manny hasn't helped. And he has been a player without a position almost his entire career.

I don't see any bargaining with those numbers, though it does sound a little bit like VD lost some motivation when the Mets were so quick to trade for his replacement after he did some acceptable work as an emergency fill-in last season.

A 107 OPS+ for a 23 year old with some power normally gets you a longer look.

My feeling is that if you want to be a major leaguer, you try harder under those circumstances, not less hard. If you don't make it with the Mets, you make it with someone. That's why Endy Chavez and Jose Valentin are getting the playing time.

i agree with old mole, he could have been back after the nady trade and floyd injury if he was hitting.
he's too young to give up on but i can't see giving him another shot in the big leagues until he shows something in the minors. the attitude is especially disappointing.
