Anyone remember these cartoons that appeared in the Sunday comics sections of the Daily News in 1973?

I was just reminded of them in an e-mail I received yesterday.

Each week was one Met and one Yankee. The only image I was able to find of a Met was the Seaver picture:

I also found two Yankee images:

I remember them.
I even (slightly) knew Bruce Stark

I've never been much of a collector but those are the kind of thing I wish I hung onto - although the quality of stuff on news print paper doesn't tend to age real well.

I remember these like yesterday--
Can anyone find the Willie Mays/ basket catch one?
I had that on my wall for weeks after I got it.

Stark was a master of the charicature.

Sure I remember them, I had a few of them on the Mets section of my
bedroom wall too. I don't remember that Seavpic at all though.

I recall the Jim Fregosi one!

The cartoon emphasized he was a "hot dog," and may have included hot dogs in the drawing.

I think it was "Hot Corner" and not "hot dog." I remember him standing at third base, and the base was on fire or something.

My memories of the other Mets pictures: Jerry Grote chasing a foul pop, John Milner swinging a hammer, Bud Harrelson fielding with a vacuum cleaner, Rusty Staub in right field with a chef's hat and an apron, and Willie Mays catching a fly ball in a basket.

I can't picture the Felix Millan or Cleon Jones pictures. I think Yogi Berra had a comic book tucked in his back pocket.

Yeah maybe. Tug McGraw in a fireman's helmet?

Yes - in fact, I remember that being shown in the 1974 (I think) yearbook. It was a picture of Tug in his locker, and the cartoon was hanging on the wall behind him, IIRC...

I have a part of my brain coming to life here, but I think we're conflating this guy's work with the 1982 yearbook cover, unless he did the 1982 yearbook cover.

And, unless he liked making Tom Seaver look like Sam Donaldson on a particularly vampiric day, it's not the same guy.

Yup, that's where I'd seen it.

No, not the same guy. Bruce Stark was much more talented than whoever did that 1983 cover.

More examples of Bruce Stark's work

These are mostly TV Guide covers, plus one picture of Mayors Koch and LaGuardia.

I like his work. It reminds me of the style seen in the movie parodies in MAD Magazine. Sort of like Mort Drucker, I think.

I can't seem to find any more images from that Mets-Yankees set, though. There was one picture of Graig Nettles that showed up in Google's image search, but the site that hosted the picture wasn't available, so I couldn't see anything beyond the thumbnail that Google displayed.

The guy in the fireman's helmet is pictured as throwing righty. Tug was a lefty. Are we sure its supposed to be Tug?

The guy pictured is Neil Allen.
