This happened sometime Wednesday but I don't think anyone brought it up yet.

The Mets came to terms with their top pick (#62 overall) in this year's draft - Kevin Mulvey from Villanova Univ. via Parlin, NJ.
He will first report to the minor league complex in Pt St. Lucie for "conditioning". The plan then calls for him to head to AA Binghamton.

The guy had a losing record in college, with not a great ERA either. It will be interesting to see what the Mets saw in him and if he can develop as rapidly as they think.

Omar's said that he wants to be agressive in promoting within the minor league system and, between Gomez (skipping high-A) and F. Martinez (full-season ball at 17), he appears to be doing just that.
This guy certainly doesn't have the track record (or draft status) that either Humber or Pelfrey had in college, but he's still 21 y/o and coming out of a Div 1 college system so he shouldn't need the kid-gloves/from the bottom up treatment of HS pitchers.
Mulvey also didn't sit out an entire year before signing like Hum-Frey did. In fact, I think this is the quickest 1st pick signing we've had since maybe Heilman.

Also the lowest first pick we've had since Neil Musser went to them in 1999 with the 73rd pick.

Three guys eventually became Mets out of that draft --- Jeremy Griffiths (Round Three), Prentice Redman (Round Ten), and Mike Jacobs (Round Thirty Freakin' Eight).

And that'll probably be it, as even the ones still floating around as organizaton guys --- Rodney Nye, Wayne Lydon --- have hit their minor league free agency eligibility.

Now that righthander Kevin Mulvey is in the fold for the Mets, where do you think he ranks in their system and where do you see him eventually fitting into their plans? I didn’t hear much about him in the run up to the draft.

A:
New York's top pick in the June draft, Mulvey ranks in the Mets' second tier of prospects. He's behind outfielder Fernando Martinez and righthanders Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber, and alongsinde players such as righty Deolis Guerra, lefty Jon Niese and outfielder Carlos Gomez.

There was talk that he could go in the supplemental first round, but the Mets landed him in the middle of the second round and signed him for slot money, $585,000. He has three solid pitches, including a low-90s fastball, a curveball or a slider. Despite his good stuff, Mulvey didn't dominate mid-level competition at Villanova, so that's a red flag. But if he develops as hoped, he should be a nice mid-rotation starter for New York two or three years from now.
