Jeriome Robertson

As in this Jeriome Robertson; has been signed by the Mets and will pitch in the minors.

I remember him vaguely from his stint in Houston a few years back - although more for the fact that he was challenging Burnitz & Gonzalez for the most creative spelling of Jeremy (Jeromy - Jeriome - Jeremi) in the league.

Sounds like insurance and/or replacements for the lost AAA-ers suddenly pressed into service for the big club.

On 'FAN before the game they mentioned this pick up and alluded to 'personal issues' that temporarily derailed his baseball career after the promising start in Houston.

Any ideas what that was referring to?

Dunno either.

He's been pitching for Newark in the independant league and was supposed to be used right away for Norfolk although it looks like they got rained out last night.
He spent last year in AAA Louisville (Cincy system) to the tune of 5-11 -- 5.46

The other news is that it'll be Lima Friday & Jeremi Gonzalez Saturday instead of the other way around.

Jeriome Robertson

My own investigative efforts have yielded little.

Robertson was traded by the Astros to the Indians despite starting 31 games and leading all rookies with 15 wins in 2003 (15-9). The impetus for the trade was the acquisition by Houston of Pettite and Clemens. There was no room in the rotation for this son of an obviously dyslexic mother.

In Cleveland in 2004 he simply pitched like crap and was sent to AAA. There is something about an incident with him hitting Maglio Ordonez with a pitch but that may or may not be anything.

The Expos got him from Cleveland for a bag of balls in August of 2004 after Robertson went 4-5 with 7.27 ERA. for Buffalo.

As Frayed Knot indicated - The Reds got him somehow and he did an unimpressive stint in Louisville.

Robertson, was signed by the Newark Bears on April 18. This season with the Bears, Robertson pitched 12 scoreless innings, striking out 15, in his two starts this season, receiving no decisions in both starts.

Why did I spend so much time finding out about this guy you ask? Because up until about 2 minutes ago I thought I was talking about Jeremi Gonzalez.

Never mind.

From Baseball Cube:

Ht:6-1 Wt:190 Bats:Left Throws:Left
High School: Exter Union (CA)
Drafted: Selected by Houston Astros in 24th round (669th overall) of 1995 amateur entry draft (June Regular Phase)

He advanced pretty quickly, making it to AAA at the age of 23, but he really struggled against more advanced hitters. At 24, he repeated AA and at 25, he spent the whole year in AAA, where he appeared to have this whole "pitching thing" figured out (180 IP, 2.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 5.70 K/9, 2.25 BB/9, 0.65 HR/9). He got a September cuppa and struggled in 2 starts, posting a Lima-esque ERA of 6.52. It was a precursor of things to come, as he managed only a 5.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP with Houston the following year, although he did win 15 games. His main problem in the bigs has been the home run--his MLB rate is 1.56/9, as opposed to 0.76/9 in the minors.

Even in the minors, however, he was never more than adequate aside from that one year--3.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 6.61 K/9, 2.55 BB/9 over 1,215.7 minor league innings pitched.

I seriously doubt he'll ever get to pitch for us.
