Back to that first ever game;
there was a sound recording (available years ago on a vinyl LP) of various
Mets highlights and I recall a one of our original announcers (Lindsey I
believe) calling that first inning balk by saying (to my memory) 'that the
Mets have given up their first run in history on a balk'
But according to that play-by-play (I'm assuming from Retrosheet) there
was already a run in prior to the balk.

So something's wrong here;
1) my memory of the call
2) the call itself
3) the synopsis above

I think maybe KC and/or Dickshot may have a copy of that recording.
Any help on this?

I have since learned that at least some of those recordings were faked, or re-created for that record, and the "balk" call was one of them. Pretty sloppy mistake by everyone involved.

I agree that alot of it gets superferlous, especially with RetroSheet.org doing exact PBP of every game, but if it can show errors in simple things, like the legend about the Mets giving up their first run on a balk, it can correct oft-repeated tales that are pure fiction or half-truths.

Sure in the grand scheme of things its pretty meaningless, who cares if the Mets first run giving up was a balk, homerun, third-strike WP, or whatever, the 1962 Mets were a horrid baseball team period, but correcting little things that can easily be researched (just go to any library that has NYT archives, or in St Louis, the Dispatch or Sporting News archives) rather than continuing to repeat "cute fuzzy" ancedotes are good for setting record straight.

Especially if you want to make the point that the 1962 Mets were not a lovable, clownish bad baseball team which is probably why the balk story gets repeated, but rather a horrid blight of a team that should be remebered as a crappy way to kick off the Mets franchise history

It's even worse than you're suggesting, since they never balked a run across the plate. On the second run, the runners moved up a base because of the balk but just to second and third, whence they came home on a groundout. So even if that were the first run, it could hardly be attributed to a balk call. Ultimately, perhaps, but ultimately the first run began when Musial's mother got pregnant.
