Am I correct in recollecting that of the eight teams going to post season play, the only difference from last year is Padres instead of Giants? I don't know where to go look

Cooby, actually, last year the twins were in instead of the chi-sox and it was LA, not the Giants.

:) I don't have a very good memory...

I guess I am just having trouble coming up with a reason to watch this year. The Red Sox are old news and the rest are just not interesting to me at all.

No offense to Annie and her Astros.

The playoffs need some new blood!

I think the playoffs need some blue and orange blood.

Next year...I can feel it in my bones!

Well, I guess the Padres and the White Sox are sorta like new blood. (Mentioning those two teams in the same sentence makes me think of Lamar Hoyt.)

I don't really have any strong rooting interests either, except of course for Angels-Yankees.

That might be the latest cold front you're feeling....

And Lamar Hoyt makes me think of those really awful softball uniforms the White Sox used to wear...

I think there's plenty to watch for. The White Sox have not won a World Series since 1917 or a pennant since 1959, so if either of those things happens that's a big story. I kind of like the Astros - excepting their Yankee-reject pitchers - and it's about time they won their first pennant. The Padres finished just a game over .500, can they go all the way? Can they win a series? Can they win a game? Is the Red Sox 2004 just a blip or has the franchise's luck turned around enough to go back to back? (After all, as Yankee fans will remind you the Sox are still 20 championships behind). How embarrasing will the Braves first round loss be this year? Will the Angels repeat their 2002 shellacking of the Yankees? What incredibly stupid thing will McCarver say?

I'm looking forward to it. Go Red Sox!

I think I could root for the White Sox.

The Twins are my favorite AL team, so rooting for the White Sox are out.

I kind of want it to be St. Louis & the Red Sox, and for the Sox to get absolutely crushed.

That'd be kind of fun. Of course, if the Red Sox win, it will really piss off Yankee fans, so I'm a little torn. And I'm still not fond of the evil Redbirds, although they're fun to watch lately.

I'd be humiliating for all concerned if the Padres win the whole thing, so maybe I could root for them . . .

Ah, hell, I don't know. I'm torn.

I'm sure there will be more than one thing.

It's too bad that Leiter is on a postseason roster this year (or is he?), because I enjoyed him tearing apart what Timmy Boy was saying. But I guess there was a 0% chance he would be invited back after that happened last year anyway, since he wasn't invited to the 2004 WS broadcast.

I can't believe how much I used to like McCarver.

Good point. I will miss that. However, maybe Piazza will be asked and Leiter will give him a couple of pointers.

The WS is a different deal that the network doesn't think it has to "spice up" with guest commentators. I think Leiter would be asked back in a minute for the prelim rounds if he were available.

I didn't realize that. With my conspiracy theory-fueled imagination, I figured McCarver told them to get Leiter our of there.

Tim McCarver paranoia is one amazing phenomenon. I happen to like the guy although I realize that puts me in an ever-shrinking minority.

Of course the reason most Met fans don't like him is that they feel he's too pro-Yankee. Then I'm talking baseball with some guys last week when his name came up and several of the MFY fans present immediately jumped in with; "that fuckin' anti-Yanqui bastard!!"

I don't think McCarver is pro-Yankee, he's just annoying. I used to like him when he broadcast for the Mets -- I found him genuinely insightful and informative. But he's become a self-parody: He hits on some obscure and trivial observation and keeps hammering at it for innings at a time. It makes me want to throw something at the TV.

I don't particularly think McCarver is pro-Yankee, he just says stupid things. Of course, he's way better than the average color guy, as anyone who regularly listens to Brave, Yankee, or (from what I've heard) Red Sock broadcasts could tell you.

I, for one, am hoping that Al will be available as a guest commentator for the ALCS.
