Schaefer POTG: September standings

I won't update the season totals just yet; instead I'll wait for the last two games to be tallied.

Tom Glavine does indeed become the first pitcher to win the Schaefer Mets Player of the Month award. (Previous winners: April, Cliff Floyd; May, Mike Cameron; June, Cliff Floyd; July, David Wright; August, Jose Reyes.)

We've traditionally had a sub-category Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month. Glavine, obviously, wins that as well. The Schaefer Mets Non-Pitcher of the Month, if such a thing should exist, would be Carlos Beltran. Carlos' only Schaefer award for 2005 is a rather dubious one.

Previous pitchers of the month have always been either Pedro Martinez or Tom Glavine.

Final totals for September (28 games):

That makes sense. Quite a good deal of sense, actually.

Now that we've finished this season, and will have some time on our hands come winter, maybe we ought to go through the All-Time Mets Rankings all over again and Schaefer-ize them.

I'm not sure what that means. If you're thinking we should do POTG voting on every game from 1962 through 2004, then count me out!

It would be a massive project, to be sure, but it would at least offer a far more comprehensive ranking system and would allow our Schaefer totals from this year to fully integrate with the rest of Mets history. We could do them quite quickly if we set our minds to it.

Maybe next year the Mets will play a bunch of October games, and we can have an October winner, too.

So someone busts it up for two games and gets declared a Schaefer PotM? Doesn't seem fair to the guy who has a great 28 games in April or whatever.

If postseason series happen, it could be broken up by series. So after we paste the Dodgers next year and David Wright hits .412 with 4 homers and 15 RBI, he could be Schaefer 2006 NLDS Player of the Series
or Schafer Player of the 2006 NLDS.

No way. All the intangibles and defensive statisics are lost doing it that way, because you're not going to know those things from looking at a box score. IMO, the way these guys have done each year is as close to fully comprehensive as you're going to get. If you're really into it, I would suggest you go ahead and give Schaefer points for each game in one year, and see how your totals match up to the CPF rankings for that year. I'm guessing they'll be pretty close. I figure you'll get through about two months of games before becoming exhausted and calling it quits.

Besides, the Schaefer system has some flaws as currently implemented, and my final rankings for 2005 will not be a mirror of the Schaefer results.

Who said anything about a POTM for two games?
