MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 According to WFAN, Piazza has a hairline fracture on his left wrist. He will be "day to day" for a few days until the swelling goes down, and they know whether he has to go on the DL.So its Castro and...?The backup catcher, Mientkiewicz is still on the DL.The next option is Cairo. On the pre-game show, Willie said he hopes he doesn't have to watch Cairo "try to catch Looper's 95 MPH fastball."So do we.There was a rumor (not confirmed) on some other Mets sites, that Mike Jacobs had been called up. There was no confirmation on any reputable site(MLB, Mets.com). But maybe Mike is sitting in the stands in street clothes, just in case.EDIT: Update. ted Robinson just announced the Jacobs has been called up. Santiago DFA.They didn't want to announce the callup until he arrived at the ballpark.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Too bad for Piazza. I hope he's OK.What almost was done once was when the Mets were stuck with one catcher and it didn't look like the backup would be able to arrive by gametime was the team was prepared to activate the bullpen catcher.Personally, a big part of me looks forward to seeing a civilian wearing the catching gear.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Castro just got rung up on a borderline pitch. He looked to argue and then realized he's suddenly the most important player on the field and can't get tossed.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Jacobs is the callup and has just now arrived at the park.#27 for those of you keeping track of such things.I haven't heard on who was sent down since Piazza hasn't been DL'd at this point. One of the pitchers I assume.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 While he's here I wouldn't mind seeing Jacobs get a start or two at 1st base. Maybe not Thursday w/the lefty Duke going but over the weekend assuming he's still here.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I'm surprised with the Met's lack of knowledge about their own players. They HAD an emergency catcher already on their roster.Who, do you ask?Cairo? No.Woodward? No.Offerman? No.ROBERTO HERNANDEZ.He used to be a catcher, and has said that the one thing he wants to do before he retires is play at catcher and throw out a runner. I'm surprised nobody even thought of him.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I will catch for the Mets before Roberto Hernendez does.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Knowing what you know about me - anybody care to guess what Met I think of when I see #27 on the back of a Mets uni?
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 pot-smoking reliever Mark Corey?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I thought you people knew me better than that.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Of course.1978 National League ERA leader, Craig Swan.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Sorry Vlad. You ain't been around here long enough to know that I hold much fondness in my heart for the '77-'79 Mets.Buncha loosers but I thought they were just the cat's pajamas I did.

Guest cooby Guests Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Me too. In fact, I can't think of anyone else that wore it.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Woodie can catch apparently, he was chatting about it on the TV side before the game.

Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 None of you people have enough respect for pot-smoking relievers.
