Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 COOBY1986- our favorite year. But basically, the music was not wonderful. In 1986, I worked at a record store. That didn't help me much; I still had to go to Columbia House and CDNow to hear snippets of 50 or so songs on the lists I found. I still couldn't remember some of them.My list extends to 27 for one simple reason: I just couldn't leave Huey off, but that song just doesn't fit in any higher up on my 'chart'. Quite honestly, there are probably only about ten songs on here that I would make an effort to ever hear again.1986 was proclaimed as "Whitney Houston's Breakout Year". Too bad, Screech, you didn't make my list. And you never will.1. Mad About You - Belinda Carlisle2. The Words Get in the Way - Miami Sound Machine(I still play this song a lot)3. We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart(I told you I liked it!)4. Holding Back the Years - Simply Red(I completely forgot about this song. But it was a pleasure to hear it again)5. Throwing It All Away - Genesis6. Silent Runnings - Mike and the Mechanics7. These Dreams - Heart(Just plain pretty)8. All I Need Is a Miracle - Mike and the Mechanics9. The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby and the Range(Depressing but thought provoking. As it should be)10. Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone - Glass Tiger11. True Blue - Madonna12. Walk Like An Egyptian - Bangles(Admit it, you liked it too)13. Take My Breath Away - Berlin(The movie sucked, though)14. Something About You - Level 42(Unfortunately, when I see this title I think of INXS by mistake. But this song definitely has its own merits)15. Back In the High Life - Steve Winwood(Fit in nicely with the Mets championship, don't you think?)16. Human - Human League17. Venus - Bananarama18. When I Think of You - Janet Jackson(Is this song really that old???)19. Take Me Home - Phil Collins20. Amanda - Boston21. Invisible Touch - Genesis22. Glory of Love (Karate Kid II) - Peter Cetera23. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung(Couldn't leave this off!)24. I Didn't Mean to Turn You On - Robert Palmer25. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel(dumb song, cute video)26. Conga - Miami Sound Machine(This song meant NOTHING to me until they used it in the opening credits of Magnum PI)27. Stuck With You - Huey Lewis and the News JONATHAN ARCHERCoobs - good list for a sucky year.I would rank Hip to Be Square over Stuck With You, though. A bad day behind a Nikon beats a good day behind a desk gf212121Holy cow. That's a lot of bad stuff. 'Holding Back The Years' is probably my favorite out of the list. But, just glancing at the '86 Hot 100, I'd have to throw in 'Kiss' by Prince, and the Dream Academy's 'Life In A Northern Town.' THE BIG TRAINSongs I also have on my 1985 list:"Holding Back the Years" - Simply Red"Walk Like An Egyptian" - Bangles"Something About You" - Level 42Lay off. Well, I don't think any of them made my final 30, anyhow, but...A lot of stuff I was expecting to grab in 1985 was actually '86: Peter Gabriel's So, Love and Rockets' Express, and most of the songs that were subsequently included on the 1987 soundtrack to Some Kind of Wonderful.I do get Robert Palmer's Riptide, which I wasn't expecting. When was Conga used for Magnum? COOBY Quote:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------When was Conga used for Magnum?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Don't know exactly when. I just remember it being in the opening credits, which gave it instant status with me! It might have even been the Sid Fernandez episode.1986 to me means Mets/Magnum/Fernandez.It's all a blur WIDE BEE GEESome say REM's Lifes Rich Pageant (1986) was their best record I don't but it leads of with two of their best songs: Begin the Begin and These Days. I'd take either of both on this list. ...and if we added "Don't Let's Start" from They Might Be Giants, we'd only be up to 30.Oooh. We forgot Graceland. THE BIG TRAINMemo to myselfDo the dumb things I gotta doTouch the puppet head WIDE BEE GEEDear God: We forgot Dear God. COOBY DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONG. You may bend it, shape it, anything you want it, BUT DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONGI didn't forget Graceland; it was an event in itself, but I didn't like anything on it. THE BIG TRAINIf not "Dear God," then "Earn Enough for Us." What a great XTC album.Widey is reading kinda drunk. WIDE BEE GEEI ain't drunk, just stressed out. I'm channeling Memories of 86.I know tonight, she comes.EDIT: I see my REM message is badly punctuated. THE BIG TRAIN Yup(c). ___________________________________ THE BIG TRAIN Most of these songs, Echo's a notable exception, were released in 1986. ___________________________________ WIDE BEE GEENot the title track neither. THE BIG TRAIN The title track was from '81, and inspired the script, but The Year of the Mets gets "Shellshock," "Left of Center," and "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want." WIDE BEE GEE The World Series and the BoDeans' LOVE & HOPE & SEX & DREAMS were big hits at the same time in Wide's crappy, smelly campus slum."Still the Night" or "Angels" could easily crack this list.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 RUN-DMC's Raising Hell - a groundbreaking album as far as rap making it in the mainstream goes - is also from 1986. I associate that album with the Mets. How could you not think of the Mets in the line from the title song "Kings from Queens, from Queens come Kings"? Also, "Walk this Way" has a group from Queens competing with a group from Boston, just like the World Series.
Guest cooby classic Guests Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Very cool. In 1986 I had a three year old so I was more into pop music than RunDMC, but that was a good song, I remember it.I did not know Aerosmith was from Boston, how lame am I?
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONG. You may bend it, shape it, anything you want it, BUT DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONG That line just cracked me up
