Soupcan, you talkin' book or movie? I did read the original Doolittle books to my daughter or rather the original books stripped of the most racist stuff by Hugh Lofton's heirs. They're pretty good, at least the first one is, after that they're pretty formulaic.

Leslie Bricusse is the most abused of songwriters -- he always gets stuck with actors who are so non-musical they have to speak his words while some violinist saws away in the background the melody that the actor is stomping all over.

Margo Kidder in Superman*

Rex Harrison in Dr. Doolittle

Fine films all, with credit to these fine performers, but I wonder how a songwriter responds when a non-singing actor is reduced to reciting his song.

That is my axe about Doolittle.

Bart did a great John Milner parody, "If I Played With the Hammer." There were some lines that I quoted last week at the light bulb salesmen convention:

"If we still had the hammer
We wouldn't be in mourning
We wouldn't be grieving
All over Mets Land."

You see, the joke is, John Milner is dead. Actually, when I think of it, that may have been in bad taste. Shame on you Train!

Bricusse should've been thrilled to have Rex Harrison act his songs. He certainly did okay by Alan Jay Lerner in MY FAIR LADY.

and Bricusse wrote for very talented singers in JEKYLL & HYDE but the show is an abomination because (1) his lyrics really suck (try listening to THIS IS THE MOMENT without giggling), (2) Wildhorne's music is utterly trite, in that Celine Dion adult contemporary way, and (3) those great vocalists (like Linda Eder, aka Mrs. Wildhorn) had no ability to actually act the songs.

writing songs to tell a story is different than writing a song intended to stand by itself. Most lyricists would opt for the actor over the singer (if they had to choose one or the other).
