Beltran is doing okay this year, but he has not yet been the "superstar" the Mets paid for this winter. Simply being good isn't going to cut it. This team really needs him to step up and be one of the premier players in the game, which is what they are paying him to be.

He made some nice catches last night, but defense in center field wasn't the issue last year. Beltran was signed and displaced Cameron in center field because he is expected to be the offensive stud of the Mets line up.

As snadgnat brought up earlier in this thread, Beltran's misguided throw to the plate last night was fundamentally unsound baseball which allowed Jeter to move into scoring position and ultimately score another Yankee run.

This team has a lot of talent, but it seems to let too many games just slip away. The offense has, as a whole, underperformed this season and the bull pen has offered only sporadic relief. There are still too many holes for this team to seriously contend for a playoff spot. Luckily, this team shows far more talent than the Mets of recent vintage.

I hate to say it, but Beltran's not doing okay. His .744 OPS is 11th out of 14 qualified NL center fielders.

He's .053 OPS points below the next highest, Jason Ellison. He's towards the bottom in AVG, OBP & SLG and towards the top in K's. He has only 1 SB.

His OPS in June is .644.

Now, I don't expect him to keep this up, and some of it is probably attributable to his quad, but he's been a very realy problem for this team .

Beltran has not been a problem. He has not been what we hoped -- yet -- but he has been far from a problem.

I don't see how you can say that. Beltran is only .058 OPS points ahead of Mientkiewicz--a difference of only 8%--whom we all agree is/was a huge problem. Piazza has a better AVG, OBP & SLG than Beltran, and we're all calling for Willie to drop Piazza in the order. This month, Beltran is hitting .202 AVG/.273 OBP/.371 SLG.

Of COURSE he's been a problem.

I expect him to snap out of it, but I don't think we should give him a pass because we all think he's due to go on a tear soon. He probably should have sat on the DL for a week or three and Diaz--who is to Beltran what Beltran is to Mientkiewicz in terms of OPS so far this year--should have been starting.

Beltran's bad month (in combination with way below average production at 1B) has been murdering us dead.
