Mets Minor League Report: Late Rally Powers St. Lucie; Walks Sink Binghamton

The St. Lucie Mets erased an early deficit with back-to-back seventh-inning home runs from AJ Salgado and Branny De Oleo to beat Palm Beach 4-2. Nicolas Carreno fired four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, and Elwis Mijares followed with three hitless frames for the win. Binghamton fell 5-1 to Richmond as Brendan Girton walked seven in 2 2/3 innings, with Nick Lorusso providing the lone run on a solo homer. The Triple-A Syracuse game was postponed, and the High-A Brooklyn game was canceled.

Third-Inning Walks Bury Rumble Ponies In Richmond

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies fell 5-1 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Saturday, undone by a five-run third inning. Starter Brendan Girton lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on two hits while issuing seven walks and striking out four to take the loss and drop to 1-3.

The damage came with two outs. Girton walked the bases full before issuing another walk that forced in the first run. A wild pitch brought home a second run, and a two-run double then pushed the lead to 4-0. Douglas Orellana entered in relief, and an inherited runner scored on an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Nick Lorusso supplied Binghamton's only offense, lining his seventh home run of the season in the fourth inning. Vincent Perozo had the most productive day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Wyatt Young added a single and a stolen base, and Jacob Reimer collected the Rumble Ponies' other hit.

The bullpen kept Richmond off the board after the third. Orellana finished 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run, Saul Garcia followed with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts, and Guillo Zuñiga worked a clean eighth despite issuing two walks. Binghamton struck out 14 times and left nine runners on base in the loss.

Salgado And De Oleo Power Seventh-Inning Comeback For St. Lucie

The St. Lucie Mets rallied past the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday behind back-to-back seventh-inning home runs from AJ Salgado and Branny De Oleo. Starter Nicolas Carreno set the tone with four scoreless innings, scattering two hits while issuing two walks and striking out seven.

The game remained scoreless through five. Palm Beach pushed across an unearned run in the top of the sixth on an error during a double steal, but St. Lucie answered in the bottom half. Francisco Toledo walked, advanced on a single by Elián Peña, and scored on a Jeremy Rodriguez double play to tie it at one.

 

Palm Beach grabbed a 2-1 lead in the seventh on a run-scoring force out. St. Lucie responded immediately. Salgado tied the game with his seventh home run of the season, and after Jamari Baylor walked and Chase Meggers reached on a force out, De Oleo blasted his fourth home run of the year to put the Mets in front 4-2.

Elwis Mijares closed out the win with three hitless innings, striking out five and improving to 3-3. Josh Blum tossed a clean fifth, and Ernesto Mercedes pitched into the seventh. Toledo finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, Peña reached base twice, and Randy Guzman added a hit and a stolen base. St. Lucie left five runners on base.
